and, give zantac (or axid or pepsid or tagament) for the 2 weeks until you see the prevacid working- just give it 2-4 hrs seperate from the prevacid- while you wait to see the prevacid’s effect-

Thank you everyone for your help.

Where would I get zantac? Over the counter and how would I give it? I know they sell zantac but it is in pill form and over the counter. Maybe they don’t sell the form you are talking of here in Canada?

The liquid Zantac (also called ranitidine) for infants requires a prescription here in Canada.

I agree that the dose of Prevacid sounds very low and may very well be compounded improperly, meaning it could lose its effectiveness very quickly. How much does your baby weigh? Here in Canada, the Prevacid Solutabs are called Prevacid FasTabs, if you wanted to go with the orally disintegratig form of Prevacid. Then you don’t have to worry about compounding and stability. As well, Prevacid is most effective when given on an empty stomach, folowed up with a feeding 30 – 60 minutes later. We found it took about 3 weeks to notice major improvement with our daughter, but we were also having difficulties timing the doses perfectly, so it may have taken a little longer than most.

Good Luck! (By the way, where in Canada are you? We’re in Brandon Manitoba.)

just a sidenote: you dont need to give compounds on an empty stomach since they are IR.

as for the zantac, it is by prescription, however, you can also get it otc as well as tagament, pepcid ( my fav). you would just need to get dosing for your babies weight. i started otc pepcid complete with my son and gave him half a tablet-those were DR Phillips from marci-kids.com instructions.

h2 blockers, according to marci-kids.com, should be 4 hours apart from a PPI, otherwise they cancel eachother out.

Ooops! Sorry – Natalia’s correct. I forgot that compounds that are made properly don’t need to be on an empty stomach! Just the solutabs, capsules and packets do. MFPIx22007-6-11 20:57:9

I live in Edmonton, Alberta. I’m curious to know since you are from Canada as well, did you have to show your Dr. the proof of the proper dosing for the medications? My middle ds had reflux when he was a baby too and I remember he was on the losec and we had to keep switching dr.’s in order to get the meds increased. It makes me so angry that these dr’s are not educated and that I have to do the research myself.

If I can get the pepcid liquid form here in Canada, does anyone know the dose I would give him? He weighs 11lbs 8oz.

Small world, my husband is born and raised in Edmonton, in the Ellerslie area!

I was very fortunate in getting my daughter on the marci-kids recommended dose of Prevacid because I’m a pharmacist (the docs usually accomodate us pretty well) and I went to our family doctor for the prescription, and he was more open to trying something new than our “old school” ped was.

I certainly recommend bringing any information that you have (especially the info from http://www.marci-kids.com) to the doctor when requesting a dose increase. It was someone here on this website who actually suggested going to a family doctor for the prescription, rather than our pediatrician, because they may be more open to suggestions. The pediatricians can be set in their ways when it comes to treating reflux, and may not want to listen to us and our info, whereas the family docs don’t treat infant reflux as often, so they may be more open to hearing new information. You may also want to get a referral to a ped GI (pediatric gastroenterologist).

Here is what marci-kids recommends for a child aged approx. 1 month and weighing 11.5 lbs:

Your child, who is 1 months old and weighs 5.2 kg, should receive a dose of 7 to 10 mg of Prevacid delivered 3 times per day for a total of 21 to 30 mg per day.

if you do decide to try pepcid while you are waiting for a higher PPI dose (ppis are much more effective than h2 blockers for treating reflux), you can email Dr Phillips-he is the pharmacist over at marci-kids.com, and he is the one that suggested otc pepcid complete to me when my son was having breakthrough reflux. he gave me the proper dose and once i tried it, my son improved greatly. he was already on a high PPI dose though, the pepcid complete was just to help with nighttime flair ups.

here is his email address:

phillipsjo@health.missouri.edu

oh yeah, i called dr phillips myself and had him speak to our ped…she was reluctant to even prescribe a PPI, and once she got off the phone with him, she wrote me a script for 30 mg

Here’s a link about ped GI’s in Canada:

It looks like there are about 5 ped GI’s in Edmonton, and a few in Calgary too.
