InactiveMy daughter was on ranitidine and the effectiveness started to wane so our doctor just prescribed Prevacid. I have put a call into the doctor but haven’t heard back and figured I would ask here in the meantime…
How do you give the Prevacid capsules to a 10 week old baby? I have read that you should mix it into a spoonful of applesauce but she is too young for that. What can I do? I am supposed to give her half of one capsule twice daily. We gave the ranitidine to her in a syringe as it was a liquid suspension and was really easy. I wondered about mixing the capsule with a small amount of formula and using the syringe as well but didn’t know if that would work.
Also I was told by a few people (online and IRL) to put a tsp of rice cereal into her formula and that would help as well.
I would really appreciate your feedback…thanks!

Inactivehmm, thats funny that you were prescribed the capsules. i am not sure if you can give it any other way than with the applesauce. it would not work in formula or rice cereal because it would destroy its coating. if she cannot eat applesauce off the spoon, i would request the compounded form and have it made for 2 weeks at a time.

Inactiveyes the capsules are not ideal for a baby that young….however, this is what i am doing with my 13 month old, maybe you can try it. he now refuses applesauce (i think he is sick of it) so i get a syringe of apple juice and while i syringe the juice in his mouth, i pour the beads in his mouth with my other hand. its a pain but it works.
also, with the capsules, it is very important to give them 30-60 min before a meal (6 oz or more) for them to be effective.
also, most doctors underdose PPI’s so dont be surprised if your babe needs a higher dose to get complete relief. you can read about the most current dosing at marci-kids.com.

InactiveHi there. Welcome to the site! Nice to see a fellow Canadian around here! Whereabouts are you guys?
About the prevacid, most docs still prescribe prevacid capsules here because they don’t know that the prevacid FasTabs are even here. They’re quick dissolve tablets that taste like strawberry. Ask your doctor for them rather than the capsules. You dissolve them in a few mls of water and then use a mylicon dropper (not a syringe) to suck up al the little beads (which are the medication). The beads are so tiny that even a little baby can swallow them. This is the type that Sick Kids hospital is now prescribing over the capsules b/c it’s easier to give. You do need to give it on an empty stomach and follow it up with a meal 30 minutes later, like Natalia said. Since you’re in Canada, you can also try getting something called CaraCream. It’s a way of turning your prevacid into a stable suspension. It’s made by marci-kids, and you can check out their website at http://www.marci-kids.com. Good luck.

InactiveSorry, I forgot to add that the advantage of the CaraCream over the solutabs is that you don’t have to time it around meals. The disadvantage is that it tastes kind of salty, which some babies don’t like (others do though), and that it’s not covered by our insurance here, so it can be a cost burden since we’re in Canada. The brokerage alone at the border is 50 dollars. But we’ve been using it for Hailey, and it’s worked for her. The only reason I didn’t do the solutabs is because we just got them here last summer, and by that time, we’d already gone down this road.

InactiveThe girls have pretty much summed it up for you, but I just wanted to welcome you to the site!
I’m in Canada as well, and we have been using the Prevacid FasTabs too. I have sometimes found the timing of the FasTabs 30 – 60 minutes before feeds to be difficult, so I am just now going to try mixing the Prevacid capsules in Caracream. It was hard for us to get the caracream from the states however, it took about a month, and I’ve also had difficulty getting in touch with Dr. Phillips at marci-kids as well, so we may just be better off with the Prevacid FasTabs.
As well, it is important to know that the Prevacid may take a few weeks to really see the full benefit, so you may want to continue with the ranitidine between doses of Prevacid (2-4 hours apart if you can) until you start to notice improvement on the Prevacid.
Good Luck!

InactiveI would reccomend the apple juice like Natalia suggested. You could mix the capsules with a little apple juice and then put them in an eyedropper (I found this easier than a syringe) and put it in her mouth. I find Alana sucks things down from an eyedropper like that (you might need to slighlty enlarge the hole).

Inactivethis may be a dumb question, but what is an eyedropper? i cant find anything big enough to suck up the beads. i tried the mylicon dropper and they dont fit in there either :/

InactiveIts what us aussies call the mylicon dropper I think. Its just hollow tube with the rubber sucker thing at the top. I was able to get a big one from the pharmacy (thicker in diameter and holds about 5 mls) and then I just nipped a little extra of the end of it to make the hole slightly bigger. I did have to make sure I put it in her mouth pretty soon after I sucked it up or a little bit dropped out the larger hole.
