InactiveThis is day 7 of our wean from zegerid. We dropped her morning dose last Wednesday and things have been going pretty well. HAPPY as can be, sleeping great, etc…UNTIL TODAY.
She was a little cranky when she got up this morning and when I dropped her off at daycare. When I picked her up this afternoon I got a brief report that she had a good ‘normal’ day. The sitter said she got a little cranky in the pool, but realized it was lunch time and Sarah was hungry. Once we got home she was whiny, fussy, crabby, and not a happy camper. In the bath tonight with DH she was being really irritable so I went and got a few mL of mylanta…guess what…she calmed down.
After about 2 minutes though, the same thing started all over again. She is now playing in her crib (I can hear her on the monitor NOT sleeping…but she’s not crying either). ANYWAY, I told DH I was scared it was reflux and he said “Let’s give her her morning dose again tomorrow and not mess around with it”. DO I GIVE IN AT THE FIRST SIGN OF PROBLEM??? Is this just rebound??? How long do I “wait and see” before I DO start giving the 3rd dose again? My stomach is just in knots over this and I’m sooooooooooooooooo disappointed to think it might be a failure. I tried calling the sitter this evening to get a more thorough report on the day but she wasn’t home. *sigh*…Do I listen to DH and cave in?I don’t think it’s teething and I don’t think it’s an ear infection (better not be!!) soooo my only thought would be reflux…she was a little gassy tonight though…UGH!

InactiveOh boy…I don’t know what to say, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you!!

InactiveOh stink!
I’m so sorry, Amy. I wish I had the perfect answer for you. Probably, if it were me, I would cave and give it to her again. BUT, I’m fairly over anxious. So, maybe you should give it one more day? She could have eaten something that didn’t agree with her, etc. The fact that the mylanta only helped for just a few minutes could mean that it wasn’t really reflux. Perhaps she only calmed down initially because she likes the Mylanta?
I don’t know..Keep us posted.

InactiveI emailed Dr. Phillips about how long rebound may take and here was his response…
The
best thing to do is to give a Tums smooth dissolve tablet, they taste
great. You can mix it in a little water, use 1/2 tablet.
This will help while she is going down in her dose.
If after 1 week she is not stabilized then go back to three doses per day.
Dr PhillipsSooo, off to wal mart I go! How long did your little ones bodies take to adjust while you were weaning? Did anyone else experience rebound and have a happy ending???

Inactiveamy-the regular fruit flavor tums have milk in them-you need the tropical 😉
good luck!

InactiveThanks Natalia! I wouldn’t have even thought of that! I got Tums and Pepcid Complete (cause I’ve heard so much about it here). Any input on which to give and why? I’ll start with Tums since that’s what Dr. P suggested, but just curious for some input.
The sitter called me back and said that Sarah had a short afternoon nap b/c it was noisy today w/ the neighbor kids over and they woke her up…or did she wake up from reflux? Maybe being in the sun all afternoon combined with a short nap caused for an overtired baby? I can HOPE, right?
The sitter also said that her DH and mom got a huge kick out of watching Sarah be silly today and fake laugh like crazy…so I don’t know what to think? My mom told me that it’s unrealistic for me to think that Sarah is going to be happy EVERYDAY ALL DAY. Great point!
Maybe I’m expecting too much and she just had a cranky day…it’s just so easy to overanalyze when you’re trying to wean from meds.Still hoping for the best…

Inactivei would stick with tums…and maybe somewhere down the road if she has night time flair ups do the pepcid complete….
good luck! i hope she can be med free!
its times like these where i wish our babies could tell us what they are feeling instead of having to guess

InactiveHi Amy,
I think I would stick with it for awhile. I mean it has only been one bad day. Maybe just watch her for a few days and see if it continues or if you can control it with Tums only… Good luck, whatever you decide!! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.June 14, 2007 at 5:11 am #36693Anonymous
InactiveAmy, not all was “sweet” when we weaned Alana. I remember a couple of times posting with my doubts (thinking maybe she had a bit of reflux and she was fussy etc). It was Christine (ndrose) who helped when she mentioned that she noticed this during her wean with Miles. I hope its just her adjusting.

InactiveThank you for the encouragement. I could NOT do this without you guys!!! DH is taking some college courses and is therefore on the computer most evenings. I begged him to give me 5 minutes to post last night b/c I knew that you all would understand and help me more than anyone else!

She was a little cranky this morning so I gave her 1/2 Tums. I didn’t notice a HUGE difference…but I dropped her off at daycare 10 minutes later so I won’t know the lasting effects of it until this afternoon when I pick her up.
This is sooooooooooooo hard!!!
Therese- Thanks for sharing that. I does make me feel better to think that an end might be in sight. This whole “rebound” thing is just baffling.

Inactivehey amy.. i think you should stick with the wean for a while too. when you said that sarah was cranky and how that isnt like her.. i was like OH MY GOSH YOU ARE SOO LUCKY..
. most babies i know are cranky on and off.. mostly because they are tired… there are days when shane drives me crazy because he is in his whiny moods..and my neice that is the same age that DOES NOT have reflux is whiny and cranky somedays too… why? i guess we’ll never really know ..you know? but you are VERY blessed to have happy little girl most of the time..
. and i personally wouldnt give up yet.. i would look for some more reflux signs of pain. also when i was trying meds with shane.. i stopped all of sudden when i thought he didnt need them!
.. he actually did seem worse for a couple of days and than it returned back to normal.. maybe in a couple days try no tums ..and see how she is doing?g’luck and keep me posted! and i really think she will do great!

InactiveLauren – I know you are right and I thank you for putting it into perspective for me. Sarah is an incredibly happy, easy going, independent little girl and I do feel so lucky that she is that way most of the time.

Today was a good day! I gave her the Tums this morning and didn’t have to give her any more the rest of the day! She had a super day at daycare and the evening was pretty good as well. Still on pins and needles but feeling more confident everyday…I’m not entirely convinced yet that we’re ready to be completely med free, but I am still hopeful that yesterday was just a fluke (or rebound working itself out).
Regardless, thanks again for all the support everyone! It means the world!

InactiveDagney has moments here and there where I think she may be having rebound, but then it seems to go away. We’re down to 15mg as of yesterday, and please keep your fingers crossed for us, but so far so good. What is the difference between the Pepcid complete, Tums, & Mylanta, I’m still a bit confused on that end, and when/what each is supposed to help. In case I need to use them, I’d like to know which to go to first. I have MYlanta & Pepcid complete, but can make a run to the store for Tums if those are best.
Her naps actually have been a little BETTER since I’ve been weaning her, but right now I’m listening to her NOT want to go down for her afternoon nap. I’ll give her a little longer, we were out at the store, so she just may need a little more time to calm down. We’re also trying to push her naps back 1/2-1 hr each so she makes it til bedtime without total meltdown.
We are very lucky too, because Dagney is really a happy little baby as well. She’s so happy that when a doctor friend of mine saw her she said that ALL babies should be on Prevacid! So the occasional bad day or crankyness may be out of the ordinary, but I guess nothing to get concerned about unless it stays and gets worse!
OH thank goodness, I think she’s asleep!!

InactiveWellllll, it seems Miss Sarah is teething after all! She was being whiney today (with this awful new face she makes…scrunches up her nose, shows all her teeth and whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiines) I decided to try orajel before I tried tums b/c she has been rubbing her teeth with her finger lately (but she also does this when she wants to brush her teeth). Sure enough there was another tooth! Already popped through! The bottom gum on the same side felt squishy like she’s teething there as well. Maybe the wean from meds was going smoother than I thought and it was teeth all along???
