InactiveOkay Everyone,
I need some clarification or insight on this. Kate’s main symptom of reflux is her trouble eating at the breast. She’s been on 30mg of prevacid for three weeks with little change.
She has good feeds and bad feeds. The cruddy ones don’t really have anything to do with the timing of the prevacid as I can tell because I know it can cause yucky cramping in some kiddos. The thing is, she starts out kind of whining, pulling off, crying, and then is usually fine. Is this reflux? I’m starting to wonder just because if her throat hurt, wouldn’t it keep hurting not get better as the feeding continued? She refluxes all throughout the day, gagging back spit up, but doesn’t seem to be in any major discomfort besides the feeding. Also, sometimes I think she’s hungry so I try and feed her and she does that same behavior when she’s swallowing but then I take her off sometimes(thinking she’s not really hungry)and she’s fine and happy. If she was hungry wouldn’t she still be upset? Also, is it normal for a baby not to be hungry but still want to nurse, just not want milk? I’m sorry if these questions sound silly but this is my first breastfeeding experience and I’m just sort of confused. Maybe she’s not really in pain anymore, I’m just feeding her when she’s not hungry
Anyway, if you have any ideas, I would appreciate it!

Inactiveit def. sounds like she is in pain from reflux during feedings. reflux pain is worse at some times and better at others. she may keep eating bc she is starving. my son would cry, suck, cry, suck….then suck….
have you eliminated all dairy and soy proteins from your diet? my son was in a lot of pain on a high zegerid dose until i put him on neocate.

InactiveIs is possible that you have OAL? Maybe the flow is too fast when you first start nursing her and then slows as she feeds so she calms down.
Also, yes it’s very possible that babies will want to nurse for comfort (even when they are not in pain). I’ve known moms of non-refluxers who loved to be on the boob and used it as a pacifier (especially when they were tired). Sometimes they get frustrated because they want to suck for comfort, but they don’t want food because they are not hungry. I babysat for a baby who even did this with the bottle. He wanted the bottle all the time, hungry or not, and especially when he was tired, but then he’d get frustrated that milk was coming out because he didn’t actually want to eat.
