InactiveInterestingly, while doing some research today, found some information
to support what my SILs ped told her about bananas being a possible
laxative:
Ripe bananas have a mild laxative property and hence are very useful in
children’s dietaries particularly as a remedy for constipation. At the
same time the fruit is helpful to combat diarrhoea and dysentery heals intestinal lesions etc.
They are also used in the diets of children being treated for severe
malnutrition. Experiments have shown that intake of banana helps
children to retain many minerals.– from http://www.bawarchi.com/health/banana.html
Banana not only reduces
the risk of high-blood pressure and stroke, but also serves as a good
laxative.– http://www.tribuneindia.com/2002/20020928/windows/main5.htm
So since the “traditional” laxative foods like pears, peaches, etc
aren’t working for us (Marisa is going 1-2 times every day but only
pebbles and small balls), maybe we should try this? I did buy some
organic bananas today and am due to trial a new food Wednesday
morning…March 13, 2006 at 6:51 pm #3743Anonymous
InactiveInteresting. I’d give it a try. Hopefully it will get things moving.

InactiveHmmmm…bananas have the “constipating” effect on Zach. The only
thing that makes him go is prunes! (Thank goodness he likes them
!) Let us know how it goes!March 13, 2006 at 9:34 pm #3751Anonymous
InactiveWhat I’m hoping (probably unrealistic) is that they might have a
constipating effect on someone who has diarrhea or “normal” stools and
a laxative effect on someone who is constipated? Not sure – but prunes
just give her cramps and make her throw up and peaches aren’t helping
and pears gave a rash, so…March 13, 2006 at 10:53 pm #3756Anonymous
InactiveWe have just finished a banana trial with success! It is the first fruit that Tyler has been able to tolerate. His BM’s are always on the runny/soft side so not sure if they help constipation. So I would definately give it a try!

InactiveThanks guys – will try tomorrow morning. And Amber – yahoo that Tyler can tolerate it!!!

InactiveI think what i have heard is that ripe bananas are laxative and unripe are constipating.

InactiveInteresting… Since I plan to use fresh/organic bananas anyway (not jarred), I will make sure they are very ripe!

InactiveGood luck! When are you going to try?

InactiveTomorrow morning – somewhere around 8am or thereabouts.

InactiveSo yesterday morning I tried – but she got mad that it was lumpy.
So this morning I instead pureed a ripe organic banana in blender with
a small amount of formula. She didn’t like taste – shivered and closed
mouth and pushed spoon away. I tried to mix with some jarred peaches
(Gerber Tender Harvest) – the one food we are eating right now. That
helped a bit but not much. Got her to eat a little by alternating
spoonfuls.I’d like to keep trying banana as I’ve been told a ripe banana can be a
mild laxative and also a natural laxative. But of course I don’t want
to force the issue. Any thoughts? Try again tomorrow morning? Maybe
puree some ripe fresh banana with the jarred peach puree?March 16, 2006 at 8:35 am #3988Anonymous
InactiveCan you give her jarred banana? Maybe it’s a texture issue.

InactiveI thought of that too Lori and tried it. That was a little better, but
not much. And I did make it REALLY smooth and thin myself by pureeing
with formula. The jarred bananas also smell really odd and I’m not sure
would have the same effect since I was told to only use very ripe
bananas and not sure how that would play in with jars and the whole
process to preserve…March 16, 2006 at 10:05 am #3996Anonymous
InactiveYes, they are very odd smelling (as is all jarred food, I find). Especially jarred meats!!!! But for some reason sometimes I find they like one more than the other (ie. jarred vs. homemade). Maybe she’ll get used to it. Sometimes it really takes more than 10 times introducing a new food before they get used to it. I’d stick with it. The reaction you describe sounds to me like her telling you she’s not sure about the taste. I bet she’ll be gobbling them up before you know it.

InactiveThanks Lori. Would you suggest mixing them with the peaches and gradually decreasing the amount of peaches for now?
