InactiveI’m very worried. Aidan is still struggling with chronic sinusitis, and after the last round of omnicef didn’t work, he put him on a high dose of Amox. and told me that he wanted to do a cat scan. Now, Austin had a CT scan when he was around 3 and another last year at 6. Both times he was able to understand to lay still, and everything went great.
How do they do a scan on little guys? Does it involve anesthesia? I would rather not have this done, but I’m sick of him being miserable and the endless rounds of antibiotics that never work (neither does saline or decongestant nose spray). I thought reflux was bad, but this is slowly creeping up behind it…his speech is being affected, and he has started holding his head in his hands and hitting his nose saying “nose hurt, nose hurt”..

InactiveWhen we did an MRI on Owen, he was 4 mo and they gave him a suppository of some medication that was like a strong seddative. It put him in a deep lul, not really fully asleep, but he just layed there and he fell asleep a couple of times, once for good until it was over (30 min). He was awake and eating in about an hour after it all.

Inactiveahhh ok, I would think they would do that for a ct scan too (I mean I can’t even get him to sit still when I change his diaper!!!!). Thanks Erica!!

InactiveOh… that’s too bad he’s been having so many sinus problems!
Poor guy! I bet that’s really miserable. I hope that they can get some answers with the CT scan and that it all goes smoothly. I hope they can do the suppository sedative for Aidan too. Good luck!June 26, 2007 at 2:33 pm #37994Anonymous
InactiveLiza was sedated for a procedure once and they called it “conscious sedation”. It was through an IV, though. It made her groggy and silly. She was out enough to lay still, but she was not uconsicous.
I’m sorry that Aidan is having such a terrible time with his sinuses. Poor little guy.
I hope they have a solution for him very soon. June 26, 2007 at 5:27 pm #38015Anonymous
InactiveI could be wrong, but I thought for a CT it was full sedation like when they do an endoscopy. I’d ask the doc just to make sure. I hope that it gives you some good answers.

InactiveWhen we were in for Ben’s 9 mo. appt. we discussed a sinus infection with the doctor, and he said that he didn’t want to do a CT on Ben because it WOULD involve full sedation. Maybe it’s different for different hospitals though.. and maybe for different ages as well???

InactiveThey had discussed doing a CT scan on Owen, but we never discussed what was involved, and it never happened so I don’t know for sure. I don’t know why they would have to put them fully under, I don’t think it takes any more time than an MRI, but like Naomi said, it could differ by hospital.

InactiveWe tried to do a non-sedated CT scan on Matthew… result was vomitting, crying and another appointment… so i would not even try it. Unfortunatelly, for the CT scan the child needs to be pretty still… they got matthew some sedation orally (or rather through the tube). He was out in 5min and slept for 1.5 hours straight. no IVs

InactiveI am sorry to hear about Aiden. Brianna had a CT scan done once because her head grew a lot from 4-6 months so they wanted to check for tumors. I scheduled the appt and they told me she didn’t need sedation. When I got there the tech said she did and it was like when she got her endoscopy done. (consious sedation I think, but they just squirt this stuff up the nose). Well by the grace of God Brianna was able to sit still long enough for the procedure, but I wish she could have gotten the meds, it would have made life easier for us all!

InactiveUGH I hate computers, ours conked out and I am borrowing a laptop. Anyway I was a bit confused, it’s not a CT scan but a sinus X-Ray. Which will be MUCH easier, I’m hoping. It’s Monday at 9:30. I’m actually hoping they find something so we can end this nose mystery. He has been off the Augmenton for 2 days now, and seems better, but he’s usually ok for about a week or so after a round of meds before the symptoms come back.
I’m thinking of keeping the laptop and using our old computer for “anger management therapy”
I hope everyone else’s little ones are doing alright!!!!!July 9, 2007 at 3:18 pm #38886Anonymous
InactiveThe X ray should be a lot easier. I will say that sinus cavities are so small and you can’t always get the info you want from an Xray or even a blood test – when it comes to sinus infections, they are hard to diagnos. I would think the antibiotic WORKING and making him feel better would be *diagnosis* enough. Has he been on Zyrtec or Singulair? If you could get an antihistimine in him to stop his body from producing the excess mucosa, you could *maybe* stop the sinus infections. Our middle guy had a TON of sinus infections. We use oral meds and a nasal spray when spring pollen comes alive. He also LOVES to have a warm washcloth laid on his upper nose/sinuses but that is hard to do with a little one.

InactiveWell, everything came back “midly abnormal”, mildly enlarged adnoids, little bit of cloudiness in his left sinus cavity, but nothing huge so the ENT wants him off everything to see what happens. The high dose of Augmenton seemed to do the trick this time.
I did have him on Claritin for a while, but the ENT said that if the discharge was thin then claritin was fine, but if it was thick then I needed to give him a mucus thinner to help his sinuses clear out. He does have flonase, but the doc wants me to stop giving that as well. So, in a nutshell, everything is ok! (Until next spring that is!!!!)Brenda, thank you SO much for the warm wash cloth idea!!! My 7 year old has constant sinus issues as well and I tried that for him last night, and he felt so much better!!!!!!!!! -
