InactivePeyton is doing better with his daytime naps and we are struggling with our evening sleep. Anyway, as we speak he is sleeping on his tucker wedge / sling. I purchased the angel care monitor and it works great. In my previous posts I mentioned that he sleeps on my chest at night. I want to try to start letting him sleep on the wedge at night but even with the monitor I am so nervous since he’s on his tummy
He is 7 weeks and has a really strong head. I have already read the posts about gerd babies doing better on their tummies, but honestly it really makes me nervous. I should be catching up on my sleep RIGHT NOW but I can’t get myself to do it. I’m sure many of you mommies understand
The monitor will alarm if it doesn’t detect movement within 10-15 seconds, but does anyone know if it would be too late by then (breathing)? I’m sorry, I am just SO scared about SIDS. Thanks for letting me vent

InactiveAby,
Cooper is going to be 19 weeks old on Friday. He is now sleeping on his tummy b/c he can roll over and I can’t make him sleep on his back anymore. We have realized that he sleeps much better on his tummy and we actually get some rest. I got the angelcare monitor once he started rolling over for my piece of mind as Cooper likes to sleep with his face planted in the mattress. We have had the monitor since last Wednesday. The alarm has gone off 3 times total, 2x the first night and then once Sunday during a nap. Everytime I ran into his room, heart racing to find him breathing and sleeping… so I don’t know if they were false alarms or if he really stopped breathing, but he is fine and I am so glad I have the monitor and well really he sleeps much better on his tummy and now that be puts himself there I can’t do anything about it. I don’t know if this helps but I hope it does.

InactiveLast night from Peyton slept from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. straight, for us that was really good. I should have slept also but I stayed up and checked on him every so often
He then slept from 12 – 3 then 3 – 6. This is the first night he’s extended his feedings to 3 hours instead of every 2 hours on the dot. I don’t know if it’ll happen again, but at least I know he can do it. Unfortunately, he started his throat clearing and grunting and squirming around 3. I am thinking of asking the doctor to prescribe Zantac to use at night to help with his restlessness. I hate to hear him whimper and cry while he’s sleeping
. I’ve read others saying that the Zantac is so weight sensitive that it doesn’t help in the long run. If you keep tabs on the weight and dosage does it help our babies for longer than 2 weeks?Aby

InactiveI would think that 15 seconds would be plenty of time to rescue him if he god forbid stopped breathing. I’d probably be scared too, but with the monitor he should be safe. Most babies sleep so much better on their tummies.
I think Zantac at bedtime might be a good thing for him, but it’s trial and error with all babies. I forget, is he on Prevacid now? There have been a few babies on the board who’ve taken Prevacid during the day and Zantac at bedtime and it worked well for them. It’s been shown that breakthrough acid is common in the wee hrs of the morning for those taking Prevacid during the day. So I think it would be worth a try.

InactiveHe’s on compounded Prilosec right now, though I’m not pleased with it right now. I am going to talk to the pharmacist about how it’s compounded. Will Zantac be compounded too?

InactiveNo, Zantac is not compounded. I think it’s considered an Elixir. I’ve never heard of any problems with how Zantac is made. Only that it doesn’t work well for most babies when used alone, but it does seem to be helpful as an adjunct to PPI therapy.

InactiveWhat should our dose for Zantac be? He is 7 weeks and about 10 pounds.

InactiveIt’s in Laura’s intro…..but from what I remember it’s 2-5 mgs per kg of body weight, but can be as much as 5 – 10 mgs per kg of body weight.

InactiveAby,
When Jonathan (our 10 year old) was an infant he had reflux/sleep apnea and was on a monitor until 6 months old. He had MANY episodes in the hospital during his sleep study where he went more than 20 seconds without breathing but started up again on his own. They never had to help him, so I would say 15 seconds is still safe. I was told that going more than 20 seconds wasn’t good, and that was the reason he needed a monitor, so as long as you knew about it by 15 seconds, you could arouse the baby if needed.
It’s so scary I know. I hated that so much and was worried SICK until Jonathan outgrew it at 6 months.
Good luck!

InactiveEmily, thanks for telling me that
Last night I tried to see if maybe he’ll sleep on his back but he started to be very uncomfortable immediately. As soon as I turned him over he was asleep. Now if I can just get the right meds / dosage so that he can sleep without clearing his throat, grunting, squirming, and crying out randomly we’ll be home free

InactiveIt has been over a week since I’ve started letting Peyton sleep in his crib on the wedge and it has been going very well! I am getting more comfortable with him being there on his tummy. The angel care monitor has put me more at ease, and I can tell hit really works because whenever I forget to turn it off after I get him out it alarms! He still is not sleeping throught the night but we are getting about 3 hours of sleep at a time. And I am glad to be sleeping back in my bed 🙂 with my husband and 2 dogs
Still working on getting him on the best meds so he will sleep more comfortably. Aby

That’s great! I hope things continue to improve in the sleep department, and that you get his meds worked out soon.July 3, 2007 at 11:23 pm #38536Anonymous
InactiveFYI, sleeping through the night is classed as 5 hrs in a row…so you are almost there
