Oy Vay…..???’s

Zantac is so weight sensitive that it seems like most parents end up going to PPI’s like prevacid, prilosec, and zegerid. It does sound like she may be refluxing but it may be a poop issue too. How long has she been on Neocate. Neocate also has been known to cause gas and watery poops. It has also been known to cause constipation. I think it depends on the baby. I wish there was an easy answer for you but you could have two things going on at the sametime. I would probably work on getting her on a ppi first and then see how things go. Then if she is still having problems with gas and poop. It seems like you have been on top of everything so that’s great. Sorry I am no more help than that.

What is her current weight. Maybe there is some room to up the Zantac dose whilst you talk over other options with the Dr. If the Zantac helped initially I would be tempted to ask for a PPI.

Either Prevacid or Zegerid would be great. It’s seems they both have a great track record, though some babies do better on one than the other. Overall they are both excellent medications for reflux. I’d avoid the compounded versions if possible since they are rarely prepared correctly. So if you want to ask for Prevacid, there are solutabs which are very easy to give, packets – trickier to administer, and capsules which you have to break open and sprinkle over applesauce.

Zegerid only comes in one form; packets that you mix with water and then administer with mylanta or tums.

Prilosec is the same drug (Omeprazole) as Zegerid, but it’s compounded.

Regarding the constipation, Zantac may have been the problem but keep in mind that constipation or diarrhea are the most common side effects of all medications. Usually it will pass once the body adjusts. So, you may see some constipation with the PPI as well. If it doesn’t pass there are natural remedies that can help. (My son had chronic constipation due to DGE).
