InactiveHi everyone. I’m new to the board. I’m glad I found you all.
My DD Allie (just turned 1) was dx’d with Reflux/Aspiration/Dysphagia in February when she was 7 months old. She was put on thickened feeds with Simply Thick and EBM. She was also put on Zantac and Reglan. (She is now on a cows milk/formula/cereal mix)
Anyway last week while feeding her she choked. It took a minute to get her to catch her breath but she was fine after that. The rest of the day she seemed ok. The next day she seemed like swallowing was bothering her a little bit but she was eating ok. The next day she developed cold symptoms (watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing) This went on for about 3 days. The head cold part is gone but now she is coughing and sounds like she is wheezing a bit. Not all the time, but mostly after feedings. There is no fever. She is eating fine and her swallowing seems to be ok now. The only thing is this slight cough and raspy/rattly sound.
I keep wondering if the day she choked could she have possibly aspirated? Wouldn’t these symptoms have showed up right away? Is it possibly just a cold? Should I take her in to be seen? (The reason I am a bit hesitant to take her in is because our new insurance coverage doesn’t start until the 10th of this month and right now we have none. Not that the insurance is the important part but I wanted to find out first if this is a possible problem instead of just a simple cold)
Advice? Thanks!

InactiveHello and welcome,
The wheezing would concern me. It does sound like she had/has a cold, and possibly a sore throat which could have been causing the swallowing problem, but that wheezing would worry me. I’d probably take her in.July 1, 2007 at 2:11 pm #38352Anonymous
InactiveFrom the perspective of someone who works with Stroke pts, aspiration can take a few days to show its ugly head. She may have a touch of pneumonia. I would probably take her to the doctor and let them listen to her chest and if they recommend a chest x-ray then go for it. It is better to be safe with these little ones.

InactiveThanks to both of you. It’s just really strange to me that one minute she sounds rattly and the next she sounds fine. (The rattling is bad right after she eats and goes away after she coughs a bit) I put my ear to her back and it doesn’t sound rattly and I don’t hear wheezing. It seems to be in her throat more.
I will take her in to have her checked just in case, though. Thanks again!Momx42007-07-01 14:44:33

InactiveI tend to be somewhat paranoid, so I’d take her in. Sometimes Hailey refluxes in her sleep, and she’s not able to clear it properly, and she starts to cough- right after she sounds rattly and I think it’s because it went down the wrong way. The last time this happened, the next day I noticed that she sounded gurgly and wheezy. I left it for a few days b/c I didn’t want to take her in to the doc just to hear “she’s fine, or it’s a virus”, and when I did take her in he said that she had pneumonia. Now I figure it’s best to get it checked out. (BUT, I also live in Canada, and we don’t pay for healthcare, so I can’t entirely relate.) Keep us posted. Hopefully it’s nothing.

InactiveThanks for the help everyone! I took her in on Monday and he said her lungs sounded clear. Her throat is a bit red, though so he thinks it’s just a cold. She’s not showing any improvment yet, though and that has me worried but I know it takes a while.
I really appreciate everyones help! Thanks again.

InactiveGlad to hear it’s not aspiration. Hope whatever it is passes soon.
