Inactivei know we are supposed to hold them upright for 30 minutes after eating but in the middle of the night feeding do i have to do this even though he sleeps on his stomach?? i read somewhere that you could hold them upright or put them on their stomach. i really need to know because my middle of the night feeding are now over an hour long with me holding him upright , which sucks when hes up every three hours.
anybody know??July 8, 2007 at 6:27 am #38806Anonymous
InactiveI’m not sure as Alana slept on her back. But I hear what you are saying about the night feeds dragging on because of the 30 mins upright. I can remember many of these. A few times I can remember falling asleep and waking up an hour later luckily still holding the baby. Maybe you could just try and see, I suspect you will know pretty quickly. Goodluck.

Inactivelovonna,
I TOTALLY understand your frustration!! When I used to feed Kate off of both sides, with that and holding her upright for thirty minutes it was almost a two hour ordeal
Especially if you’re feeding every three hours!!!! Holy cow when do we get sleep!!!! For me, and this is just me, I found for Kate it really didn’t make a huge difference with the spit up being upright for 30min exactly as long as she was thoroughly burped. I usually keep her upright tops ten minutes but she sleeps on her back so maybe that’s different. Sorry I’m not much help but for us, the 30min upright rule wasn’t a HUGE deal maker or breaker. I agree with Therese that you should just see what works for your baby b/c unfortunately, like all things reflux, there is no golden rule and all babes are dfferent
Bummer I know. Good luck though!July 8, 2007 at 11:37 am #38830Anonymous
InactiveI agree with Claire. I used to do it for about 10-15 minutes, but as long as he was burped well and seemed comfortable, he usually did fine. For some reason, it wasn’t as big of an issue at night as it was during the day. Ben slept on his tummy too.

InactiveCade’s pediatrician said that tummy time during the day would help keep him comfortable after eating because laying on the belly helps…something…I’m sorry I don’t remember exactly what he said. But it had to do with keeping the food in the belly instead of coming up. My impression was, if Cade was on his belly, the reflux wouldn’t be as bad. That being said, I’d think (if the ped. is right) if he sleeps on his belly it might not be as critical to keep him upright for 30 minutes.
Of course, if that was completely the case, maybe reflux experts would tell us just to put baby on his/her belly after feedings…? I’m just relaying what I was told
I’d give it a try for a couple nights and see how the baby does!July 8, 2007 at 12:48 pm #38834Anonymous
InactiveI didn’t keep Cooper upright at night when he slept on his back and still don’t now and he is sleeping on his tummy. I like Naomi found that his reflux wasn’t as bad at night, I attribute that to the fact that he wasn’t as active and moving all around. You may want to try putting him down after a feed at night as see how it works. Trial and error have become my good friends.

Inactivewell, we always adhered to the 30 minute rule but I remember how exhausting it was. It seemd like by the time we got him feed, held him upright and back to sleep, it was time to do it all over again!
We always put Seth on his back so I don’t know about the tummy thing. I guess it’s worth a try. If I had to do it all over again, I think I would put him in his swing or bouncy (in our room of course) to keep him upright and go back to bed.July 9, 2007 at 2:06 pm #38865Anonymous
InactiveKaelyn was often up every two hours at night, so we rarely followed the 30 minute rule. If she seemed comfortable after about 10 minutes we’d put her back in bed. It never seemed to make a difference with her. She spit a ton during the day, but usually didn’t spit as much at night.

InactiveI did not hold either of my boys upright at night after a feeding. With Justice his reflux was not as bad at night and to be completly honest it made no difference for either of my boys to hold them upright. Don’t get me wrong, they never slept on their backs flat. I had their beds elevated and in the early months they slept upright in a swing or bouncy seat. So, I don’t know, maybe you would consider that holding them upright.

But as far as staying up with them and holding them upright I didn’t do that.July 15, 2007 at 9:19 am #39260Anonymous
InactiveI think that the amount of time you have to hold the baby upright depends on the baby… Brady needs to be up an hour after feeding, minimum, or he chokes and coughs like mad. And he is a tummy sleeper, too.
He still has a 2am feeding, and it is tough – I can relate!Up until about a week ago, we co-slept with him on a sleeping wedge between myself and his daddy. After the 2am, whomever took the shift would either go back to bed with him on our shoulder/belly and wedge pillows in on either side of us or go sit in the a big recliner in the same position. That way, if we dozed and he moved at all, he would be safe and cushioned. But we got so completely sleep deprived that we’ve switched to shift sleeping – me from 8pm to 2am, his dad from 11pm to 5am. That way, we both get 6 hours of quasi-straight sleep, and we both can stay up the hour following whatever feeding shift we are doing.I hope things even out for you and Alexander soon! -
