InactiveHello! I have a 2 and a half year old that had reflux. He started on Zantac and constantly had to have the dosage increased. He did much better when he started on Prevacid. I think it was around 4 months, but I can’t really remember. I now have a 2 week old just diagnosed with reflux. He started on Zantac. I really don’t want to mess around with Zantac for too long, but my ped prescribes the Prevacid packets and it seemed like it took a lot of fluid to give it. I would mix it with water and then to get all the beads in him, I would add a little more water. I was just wondering if this is too much fluid to give a newborn and when was the earliest that your babies were started on something other than Zantac.

InactiveCan you ask for the Prevacid Solutabs? These are little tablets that dissolve easily in water. They can be given with only a few ml’s of water so the volume is very small.
Most docs start with Zantac because it’s the “old school” treatment and they move up to PPI’s like Prevacid when Zantac fails, but I don’t think there’s any reason a baby can’t start with Prevacid as a newborn.July 15, 2007 at 9:21 pm #39299Anonymous
InactiveKaelyn started at 8 weeks on the solutabs with no problem. We discussed them for Alex at 4 weeks (ended up deciding to wait and see, but the ped was open to the idea at that age).

InactiveHi Jennifer, I used the packets for about 5 months. They are a pain to give but Alana and I got used to it. I used to make the packet up then syringe of most of the water/strawberry liquid and just give the beads a a little of theliquid (about 5 mls). Given its OK to feed bubs little bits of water I though that a few mls here and there was OK. Goodlcuk.

InactiveI would try and see able the solutabs. We used the packets for about 2wks and they are a pain b/c it is so much water that you have to mix it with. The solutabs are much easier to administer. Good Luck.

InactiveJennifer, I’m with Christine and Beth. The Solutabs are way easier. Brady started on them at 6 weeks, and they dissolve in a medicine syringe with just a couple of milliliters of water. When I saw the pediatrician for his 2-month checkup, he told me that Brady was big enough to take the solutab directly in his mouth, by putting it in his cheek so that it starts to dissolve before he rolls it around in there much, and assured me that he would not choke on it.
I administer it that way now (Brady is 11 weeks) and watch him really closely (he has coughed a couple of times, but I think that is because the little beads tickle the back of his throat – he did it when I was dissolving in liquid, too).Good luck with your little one – Prevacid has helped my guy.July 19, 2007 at 1:14 pm #39541Anonymous
InactiveJennifer,
Just wanted to add my two cents and tell you my daughter started prevacid at about 6 weeks. I bet there are some babes out there who satrted a P.P.I even earlier!
I hope you can get the solutabs b/c besides the pain in the head timing them with meals, they’re super easy to administer. Good luck with everything!!July 19, 2007 at 2:54 pm #39553Anonymous
InactiveWe started at about 8 weeks. I’d also go for the solutabs. Good luck.
