InactiveHi
My 5 week old daughter was switched to Nutramigen formula (on a trial basis) to see if it would help the silent reflux that she is experiencing. We started 5 days ago and just yesterday we noticed a drastic change in her bowels. Both yesterday and today Elizabeth has had one morning bowel movement that is loose (yellow, watery), it immediately escapes her diaper and stains her clothes. I know that Nutramigen is easier to digest however I’m not sure if her bowel movements are typical for a child on Nutramigen…….Does anyone know if this is typical?
Previously we were on Good Start Formula and then Good Start Soy. On both of those formulas we were dealing with constipation issues along with the silent reflux. So far after 5 days Nutramigen we haven’t noticed any change in her reflux….so it’s difficult to say whether we should stay on it or change again……especially with the new bowel issues. All responses are greatly appreciated!!!July 16, 2007 at 12:21 pm #39317Anonymous
InactiveAnne,
My daughter is on Nutramigen for her reflux issues as well. Yes, it can change her bowel movements to diarrhea. I just gave it a little more time, and her bowel movements adjusted. They aren’t formed, but they are soft and easy for her to pass. We have to thicken her formula with rice cereal so she will keep it down, and that could have contributed to the bowel movements not being diarrhea. I am not sure. Just make sure that there isn’t any mucous in the bowel movement, if so then I would talk to your doctor.I hope this helps.July 16, 2007 at 1:23 pm #39321Anonymous
InactiveNutramigen isn’t used to treat reflux. It is used for babies who have MSPI. The milk proteins in the formula are completely broken down making it easier to digest. I just didn’t want you to be disappointed that her reflux was still a problem on the formula. The formula won’t help that, just a proper medicine.
We had Sarah on Alimentum (which is Similac’s version of nutramigen) Sarah had diarrhea for a few days before her bowels adjusted and we didn’t have any problems after that!
I’d stick it out a little longer (they usually suggest 2 weeks) and then make a decision from there. Good luck!! I know how stressful it all is!!!
By the way, I love your girls’ names! My DD is Sarah Elizabeth! 🙂

InactiveWe are on Nutramigen. Cooper has 4-6 bm’s/day he was up to 10/day when he was cutting these recent 2 teeth, but usually we have about 1 per feeding. They are always loose and soft and our are mucousy, but that is b/c of his protein intolerance. To me the resemble his breastmilk poops but I don’t consider them diarrhea. Just hang in there and give it alittle more time for digestive system to get settled. Good Luck.

InactiveMy son was switched from Isomil to Alimentum to try and at first his bowel movements were more like diarrhea, now they are soft but not diarrhea. It can take some time for the digestive system to figure out it doesn’t need to make all the enzymes to break down food. Once it catches on the bm’s should gel a little better
(like that – gel!) Kristen

InactiveAlana was (still is) on pepti-junior which is similar. Until we started solids her poos were always liquid…always! Hopefully your bubs might firm up a bit, but Alana’s didn’t. And they were green…yuk I don’t miss those!

InactiveThe reason I said she is on the Nutramigen for her reflux is Nutramigen is easier for her tummy to digest. The formula is already partially broke down, and the formula doesn’t sit there on her stomach. In turn she doesn’t reflux as much, because her system can process it easier/faster. Both my children’s reflux improved greatly on Nutramigen.
Anne,I hope your little guy gets to feeling better. I am not sure about the Zegrid, as I use Prilosec for my daughter. I tried the Tums with her, but it wasn’t the smooth dissolve ones. She did the same on them as she does the Mylanta. She did exactly as you describe your son is doing. The grunting/moaning until she passed her BM then she was much better.Babies with yucky tummies and reflux are like a puzzle. Just trial and error your way to keep them comfortable until the grow out of it. It is very stressful to try to comfort them to no avail without much success. Just know you are doing all you can, just being there for them helps more than you know.Good luck!!July 19, 2007 at 3:05 pm #39554Anonymous
InactiveYup, our ped said Nutramegin causes extremely loose stools – take heart, it seems to become a little less watery after about 10-14 days, though you will sill get a looser one occassionally. Color (that we’ve observed) can range from light yellow to neon green. It also can take 2 weeks to adjust to a new formula (we know… Brady has been on 5 of them!!!!).
The worst is when they ‘go’ during a feeding… and it goes up their back… ugh. I swear Brady times it so that he is sure to get extra tubby time!
