InactiveHi- I am having a hard time giving my 2 month old the Prevacid Solutabs. When I squirt the syringe in his mouth, he spits it right back out and alot of it winds up on his cheek and neck. I end up wetting my finger and trying to scoop up the beads and get them back in his mouth. My husband does a better job with it but he isn’t always home. Is there an easier format for giving the Prevacid to a 2 month old. My GI said she could precribe us the capsules that you break open but I’m not sure if that will be any easier. Any thoughts, tips or advice would be appreciated!!

InactiveYou can try putting your finger in his cheek and holding the tab until it dissolves. We were doing that when Cooper was taking 1/2 tabs at a time and it worked well. The whole tab takes alittle time to dissolve in the cheek.

InactiveWe also give solutabs and found that we make sure the medicine falls to the tip of the syringe and then squirt that first little bit into his cheek as far back toward the thrat as you can reach it and wait for him to swallow. We make sure he is lying back so gravity pulls the fluid to his throat and he really cant spit, he has to swallow. We keep giving him little bits of the rest of the fluid until its all gone.
We were told to mix the tab with 4mls of water which is just below 1 tsp of water.July 19, 2007 at 10:25 am #39523Anonymous
InactiveThat’s exactly what I do too. I let it sit in the syringe for a bit to make sure it’s all dissolved, then I cover the tip with my finger and work it so the tip of the syringe is full of the little beads and hold Dagney like I’m feeding her. At first it was hard and she would spit out some and have orange bead all over her chin, but she LOVES the taste of them now and gets all excited for it when she sees the syringe! We use just about 1- 1.5 tsps of water for about 2/3 of a tablet. Sometimes there is stuff left in the syringe, so we take in a bit more water & repeat, which is just an added treat for her now!

InactiveWe used ndrose’s advise and used a mylicon dropper instead of a syringe, and held it far back in the cheek. We tried to blow in her face to get her to swallow. It wasn’t pretty. I hope you find something that works.

InactiveMyles hated all meds when he was first started on Prevacid so he would spit it out even though it doesn’t taste bad. I learned a trick that worked well for him and a few moms here have tried it and said it worked for them.
First I used a medicine dropper, not a syringe. For some reason it makes a difference. You can buy them at the pharmacy or just take one off of an infants Mylicon, Tylenol, or Vitamin bottle. So, I’d dissovle the solutab in a little medicine cup using just 2-3 mls of water. (Keep the cup tilted to the side so all the beads stay in one area). Then I’d draw it up into the dropper and insert the dropper inside his right cheek towards the back, but not far enough to trigger the gag reflex. Then as I squirted the medicine in I’d briskly move the dropper from right to left across the back of the tongue. This helps to prevent the baby from spitting it out for two reasons. First, it disperses the medicince across the back of the mouth instead of pooling it all in one area. Secondly, it’s harder for them to purse their lips and spit the meds out when the dropper is still in their mouth. Then once I took the dropper out I’d push up gently on his chin which also helps prevent spitting. One last thing….if there were any more little beads in the medicine cup I’d add another ml of water and admisinter it the same way.I hope that helps.July 19, 2007 at 12:29 pm #39538Anonymous
InactiveHi, new member here. My first son had silent reflux and was on Neocate and Prevacid packets.
Now my second son has the same issue. He is about 10 weeks old and is on 15 mg/day Solutab. Doctor said to give it in the morning once a day, but I remember with my fist that it was better when we split the dose.Problem is with the Solutab tablets, even if I use a pill cutter, I get a lot of “crumbs” and just seems to make a mess. Then you have to deal with storing those small pieces for the second half that you administer in the evening.Anyone have any tips on this? Too bad the tablets aren’t scored.Thanks,Dinodinom2007-07-19 12:32:14

InactiveHello Dino,
I think with time you get better at dividing the solutabs. I thought it was impossible at first but after a while it became much easier. Myles was on 30 mgs. so I had to divide two tablets each day. For some reason I found it easier to divide them slightly off center so it wasn’t exactly 1/2 and 1/2 but they didn’t crumble as much that way. I’d divide them right over a small medicince cup and let the “crumbs” fall into the cup. Then I’d put the smaller piece in with the crumbs and give him that dose first and save the bigger piece for his next dose.Good luck and glad you found us.

InactiveThanks Christine.
What do you use to cut/divide them?July 19, 2007 at 3:16 pm #39556Anonymous
InactiveWe use a pill cutter we bought at Walgreen’s. It’s called the Walgreen’s Safety Shield Tablet Cutter. We have virtually no crumbs when we cut the Solutab using it.

InactiveThanks Kelly, I’ll have to swing by Walgreens to pick one up. The main issue I see is that the Solutab tablets are so brittle.

InactiveI just used my hands, but the pill cutter sounds like a good idea.

InactiveWe use the Walgreen’s pill cutter too, although we do get crumbs fairly often. I just kind of gather them all up and it seems to work out ok. I think if you cut it quicker there may be fewer crumbs…I’ll have to check that next time I have to cut a pill!

This is what we did as well. It worked great.
Cutting the tabs in half are a pain. I just scored them gently and then cut them in half as best as I could. I had a special container with lid that I stored the other half in until the next day. It’s a pain, but the solutabs have been much easier to administer than the packets, for us.

Inactivewell in about a month or so when he starts being able to lick off a baby spoon.. i would use the spoon…it worked very well with us. we would put it on a babyspoon, put a couple drops of water on it to melt it..than “feed” it to him! he loved it, and licked it up!
I would also wrap the rest of it up in aluminum foil and put it in a little container as well.. because it gets ruined by the light!
