InactiveAriella hates having shoes on her feet. When I attempt to put them on, she starts getting nervous (ok, ok, she screams) and eventually takes them off altogether. I’m finding out more and more info that wearing shoes should be postponed until they’re 1. Did you hear something like that? I’m afraid we’ll have even harder time as she’s getting older.

InactiveSarah would constantly play with her shoes and take them off. She would NOT leave them alone for anything!!! I thought I was going to have a barefoot monkey running around her whole life. Finally when she was around 12 months and started walking she got “used” to her shoes and didn’t mind having them on. Now at 15 months she CONSTANTLY takes my flip flops off my feet and walks around the house in them. She’ll also spend 15-20 minutes diligently trying to put on her own shoes. Hopefully this is something Ariella will grow out of too. I thought Sarah would NEVER like shoes…but she came around. Good luck!

InactiveFrom all I’ve read it’s best to leave them barefoot until they’ve mastered walking. They actually need their toes to help with balance, and I guess there are other reasons but I don’t remember them all. I didn’t put shoes on any of mine, except for outings on cold days or maybe for pictures, until they were walking for a few weeks or longer.
Myles also used to scream with either sheer terror or simple rage (he’s got a terrible temper) when I put shoes on him. I was worried about it but decided it wasn’t worth the battle, so even after he was walking (which he didn’t do until he was 15 months old
) he still would not wear shoes. It was so aggravating because I’d take him someplace and have to put him in a stroller or carry him because he had no shoes on. Well, one day we were at the park and he wanted to play with the girls. I told him he’d have to wear shoes if he wanted to get out of his stroller and play, and I put them on him and ever since then he was fine with shoes. So, I guess the moral of my very long story (sorry) is maybe it’s better to “cross that bridge when you come to it.” Since she doesn’t need shoes now anyway it’s probably fine to let her be shoeless for now and figure out how to solve the problem later.
One thing I’ve learned as a mom is that the majority of things I worry about never happen. Of course I still worry.

InactiveGabby just learned to walk in and wear shoes within the last month. It took a months worth of walking barefoot before she could tolerate walking with shoes on her feet. And we still only put shoes on her if we’re going somewhere away from home. Otherwise, I still let her walk barefoot around the house and yard.
She still likes to play with the velcro and chew on her shoes when she gets a chance though. This usually happens when she’s bored in her stroller or car seat.

InactiveI also didn’t put shoes on my kids until they learned to walk. They would never keep shoes (or socks) on either until then.

InactiveKaelyn was fascinated with her shoes and always wanted to play with them. It wasn’t that she hated wearing them, she just liked taking them off and trying to put them back on. I swear that’s why she was able to put on her own shoes at 18 months! Alex never liked shoes, so I put her in Robeez for school (they required shoes) and let her go barefoot at home. She just started wearing regular shoes last month after she started walking well.

InactiveWe used Robeez to protect her feet outside or at school when she was that age, and didn’t switch to real shoes until she was walking well. Even now, my kids are always barefoot at home.

InactiveI’m a completely fine with leaving her barefoot. In fact, I love walking barefoot in my apartment. It’s really my inlaws who are pushing us to put shoes on her. Their first granddaughter would NOT wear shoes at the age of one and it was not acceptable for them. So they keep telling us “you’re the parents, it’s for you to decide” yet we hear about it almost every day. Grrr…on a completely different note, what happened to my ticker? Why isn’t it showing? mariannardh2007-07-20 13:06:31

InactiveI brought Alana some very high end expensive shoes (she has a pre-walker size foot but needs walkers, limiting my choice). Well she just would not walk in them AT ALL. So I took them back and exchanged them and as soon as she had the new ones on she started to walk in them. So maybe just give a few different types a go? It also could have been she has an extra 1 weeks practice since the first pair. The shoe place said to wait until a little one has been walking stabiliy for 4 weeks prior to using shoes. Good luck.
