InactiveSo it is currently midnight. Cooper went to bed at 8;15p tonight, his usual and after much screaming b/c he was tired. Anyway, he woke up at 10:30p and I gave him his paci and his bear and I think he went back to sleep, at least I did. Well at 11:30p I heard him “stirring/talking” and decided to go and check on him. He was lying on his back with his eyes WIDE open like he had just woken up from a Nap. So I have spent the last 30 min trying to rock him back to sleep. He has been screaming, but no tears for the last 15 mins of the rocking. I am assuming it is b/c he doesn’t want to go back to sleep. My solution is to keep him in his room and try and teach him that it is night time and he needs to be asleep. My dh on the other hand wants to take him into our den and play with him until he is tired! and then put him back to bed. Which do you do? Do you encourage playtime in the middle of the night? How do you get him back to sleep when he is obviously wide awake and what the heck is causing this? I have him tylenol at 7:40 before his bedtime bottle and now I think the poor child can’t sleep without the aide of medicine…. Ughhh…. I am at a total loss. Is this just teething mess and will pass or have we really screwed up somewhere and I don’t know it…..TIA

InactiveIf he was up content and just didn’t want to go back to sleep, I would follow your plan and not dh’s. I wouldn’t want him to learn that if he was up he could play even thoug it was time to sleep. That being said, I realize the hypocrisy in what I’m saying since I never taught Hailey to sleep due to her reflux.

InactiveJust a thought that may have already been mentioned, but the first time we had to increase Sarah’s zegerid dose was when she started teething. NOTHING was working for her (hylands, motrin, tylenol, orajel…you name it!) One night she was up in the middle of the night and I was at my wits end so I tried mylanta and she calmed down. We upped her dose the next day and she even had a 2nd tooth pop through a few days later and we didn’t even know it. Could he be having a reflux flare from teething?
I agree with Lori to continue with “night time” things in the middle of the night. We’ve taken Sarah out to play before when all else failed and it backfired on us for a few nights.
GOOD LUCK!

InactiveI would not take him out to the den to play in the middle of the night. That will only encourage him to get up more at night if he knows that’s an option. I’d keep the room dark and try to comfort him without leaving the room. It definitely could be teething. I’ve been through it with all three of my babies. It’s real PITA!
I think what happens sometimes is that when they are teething they wake up during those light sleep stages with some varying degrees of discomfort. When they begin to stir during light sleep they become more awake than they would if they were not teething. (Sort of like if you woke up in the middle of the night with a headache). My kids would do this often when teething. Many nights I’d kick myself for not giving them tylenol or Motrin before bed.I hope tonight goes better.July 29, 2007 at 11:01 am #40068Anonymous
InactiveI agree with the others not to play with him at night. My dh is the same way and we argue about it but he usually ends up deferring to me becuase he knows I read all the sleep books. I would feed him IF you think he’s hungry or I would just try to soothe him back to sleep.

InactiveEvie is just around the same age as Cooper, and she does this once in a while. Usually if she doesn’t have a nice full belly when I put her down. Like if she’s really hungry at 7, I’ll feed her but she isn’t ready for bed until 8:30. This is when she wakes up at like 10. I try and give her 2 oz. just before bed and it usually keeps her for 10-12 hrs. Also, if she demands to stay awake, I will do a quiet activity like reading or playing with a soft toy. Not the exersaucer or gym though–I’m headed for trouble if I do this! Good luck!

InactiveWell we were up until 2am!! We fed him 6oz at about 12:45a and I gave him motrin at 1:30a and he still didn’t go down until 2:05a to be exact. He then woke up at 2:56a and again at 4:45a and I fed him 2.5oz then and he was up at 6:20a for the day. Luckily DH noticed how stressed I was and got up with him this a.m. so I got to sleep. He is in a perfectly good mood today. No new teeth or anything and no meds since this a.m. I hope this is teething and not a got my days/nights mixed up thing…. He always has a full belly before bed taking 7-8oz right before I put him down so I don’t know what it is. Lets just pray we get a good nights sleep tonight.

InactiveI feel your pain. I know how hard it is when they keep waking up at night like that and you just get so stressed and tired. My 3 yr old is also starting to wake up sometimes with nightmares and he used to wake up for the day around 7:45am but now it keeps getting earlier and earlier and this morning he woke up crying from a bad dream at 6:00am. Ughhh.
Can I ask a question about the feedings right before bedtime? I try to do that with Brian but since he’s only 2 1/2 months old, his schedule is never the same. A few times he has slept through the night (like 10pm-5:00am) and then I try to put him down for naps after not more than 2 hours of wakefulness during the day becuase that is what the sleep book I use (Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby) recommends for his age. He eats about every 3 – 3 1/2 hours during the day. So if he eats at 6:00pm, he normally wouldn’t eat again til 9:00pm but if we put him down to sleep at 7:00pm, he’ll sleep through the 9:00pm feeding and then be up once or twice during the night. Is it better to wake him up for the 9:00pm feeding or just let him sleep and accept that he’ll wake up once or twice to eat then later on in the night. Are the babies who are 5-6 months old on more of a regular day and night schedule so they are eating around the same time every day?July 29, 2007 at 4:14 pm #40089Anonymous
InactiveKelly,
Our schedule is pretty much like this:Up for the day sometime b/t 6a-7a. First nap about 2-2.5hrs after he has been awake today it was 3hrs, but usually b/t 8:30 and 9:30am after that we get pretty unpredictable with naps as sometimes he takes 2/day and sometimes he takes 3, just depends on how long the naps last. But if he is going to take 3 naps I put him down for his 3rd one around 4pm, he just went down a few mintues ago. Our feeding schedule is this:6:30am – 15mg prevacid first feeding ~7amThen he eats again at 10:30a, 2p, 5:30p and then b/t 7:30 and 8 for bedtime around 8:30. Until the last 2 nights we were eating 4oz sometime between 2-4am, but the last 2 nights he has had a ~12:30a feeding and then the 4:30 feeding. I hope we can quickly get back to 1 feeding/night. I think when he was 2.5months old, well he wasn’t sleeping worth a toot then we still werent’ on the right meds. We were feeding 2 times a night until he was I think 3.5months old. I hope this helps and makes some sense. The only schedule I try to keep with Cooper is up b/t 6-7a and bedtime b/t 8-9p with 2-3naps/day. The rest I try and roll with.July 30, 2007 at 12:38 pm #40145Anonymous
InactiveBeth,
Caden does this sometimes too, and I am not sure if it’s a reflux flare or teething, but he does seem to have both going on when this happens. Maybe it’s both!Anyway, on two occasions he has woken up in the middle of the night and been up for 2 hours just like you’re describing. I didn’t do anything differently with him. I just stayed in the dark room and put him in my Mei-Tai carrier and walked him around (rocking would be comforting too), and he has not done it again so far. I’m not sure why he did it, but he didnt’ have his days/nights mixed up for sure, because the next night he was back to normal.I hope this is an isolated incident for Cooper too. Maybe his teeth were really bothering him or his reflux was flaring…it’s so hard to know with our little ones. I will be much happier when Caden can communicate with us!I hope you have a better night tonight!Oh, I forgot to mention that one of the times he did that, he ended up having an ear infection several days later…I think you said Cooper just had one, so maybe it hasn’t cleared up all the way? Just another thought. -
