InactiveWe went to a new pedi G. I . Thursday and he told me to only give here 2 formula bottles a day. To give her more jar food and all the jucie she wants. This does not seem right she only take 4 a day at 3 ozs now. How is shegoing to get what she needs in 2 bottles. Have any of ya’ll heard of this?

InactiveHi,
i responded in your other post about this.
I think its crazy too.. and she should be getting atleast 18 ounces a day in formula..my only thought is if its possible that the elecare is alot differenct than regular formulas, in that she would need less of it. (i am not familiar with elecare, but i doubt that that is the reasoning behind it) If that is not the reasoning.. than i would not understand why he would tell you to only do 2 bottles a day.shanesmom2007-07-29 21:10:42

InactiveAt five months, two bottles a day seems pretty low. 6 oz just doesn’t seem like enough.

InactiveThat seems low to me too. My son was refusing bottles for a few days before we put him on Carafate in addition to the prevacid. Could your baby be refusing the bottles because her esophagus is hurting? If so, maybe Carafate would work for her too.
My pedi GI did say that once babies are 6 months old, if they are really refusing to take a bottle, that you can “work around it” using solids, etc. but two bottles a day still seems low. Plus “all the juice she wants” doesn’t seem like a good idea either. Juice doesn’t have much nutritive value and it will fill her up so that she doesn’t want solids or formula. Can you get a second opinion from another GI?July 29, 2007 at 11:00 pm #40113Anonymous
InactiveThis is the second GI we go to. She loves her bottle she wants one all the time but if you feed her more she throw up more.

InactiveSounds absolutely rediculous and totally against the recommended guidelines of breastmilk/formula being the main source of nutrition until 1 year. I would probably try and get another opinion personally.

InactiveI would never accept that advice. There’s no way that 6 or 8 ounces of formula could possibly be enough for an infant. It’s essential that an infant get proper nutrition. They need protein, fats, and minerals and vitamins. Juice contains no protein, no fat, and minimal vitamins and minerals. Fat intake is extremely important for proper neurological development in the first two years. That’s why they say to keep a baby on breast milk or formula for a year and then give them Whole Milk until age 2. I think she will become malnourished if she is only offered two bottles of formula per day. I can’t understand this doctor’s reasoning.

InactiveI just wanted to add that our GI told us NOT to give her juice because it could make the reflux worse.

InactiveWow.
My dd’s bf and I don’t have a clue how much she gets a day but I was a nanny and worked in daycare for years before I had my own baby and I’ve NEVER heard of a baby thriving on so little(I’m no expert though
). You have been through so much but I would agree with everyone else that you should try and change docs. It’s so weird that he would suggest replacing the benifits of formula/bm with juice!
I think he has a screw loose.

Inactiveall the juice she wants????? that seems like really BAD advice. our ped gi told us not to give very much juice because it has no calories and it will lessen their appetite for regular food.
6 months seems too young to only give her 2 bottles a day since breast milk or formula should be their main source of nutrition for a year.did this doctor give you any reasoning for this way of feeding your daughter? -
