InactiveHi guys! My last post was about deciding whether or not Peyton would be able to transition from the Tucker wedge / sling to flat on his tummy in the crib. I started him on the wedge last night and he slept for 5 hours for the first time
! After I nursed him I decided to try him without the wedge for the rest of the time because he usually sleeps for shorter periods after the first feeding. Well, he did pretty good, sleeping about 2 1/2 hours. Now I’m faced with a new dilemma
:When he sleeping flat I could hear him doing his usual grunting though it wasn’t too bad. I didn’t get much sleep during those 2 1/2 hours cause I kept checking on him. When I checked on him I saw that he moved around a bit in the crib. He had moved at an angle to where the top of his head was touching side the crib bumper. I decided to leave him be so that I wouldn’t wake him. When I finally went to sleep, the Angel Care monitor alarm sounded, my heart leapt out of him chest as I can to the room. He was ok, he just had moved away from the sensor toward the edge of the crib and it couldn’t pick up his movement. It scared me to DEATH
!!! So now my question is:Should I remove the crib bumpers so that he doesn’t move in a way that his face gets smooshed in them? Remember he sleeps on his stomach so that worries me enough already. It hadn’t been a problem when he was strapped in the wedge. But then I worry about him hitting his head or getting trapped between the slats. Sorry this post is so long … just wanted your advice
Thanks!AbyPeyton James 5/7/07August 2, 2007 at 8:52 am #40323Anonymous
InactiveI know several moms (Beth, Cooper’s mom) have used the breatheable bumpers. They are still able to keep hands and feet from getting out of the crib but they allow them to breathe if they do stick their face against it. Would something like that work for you?

InactiveTwo of my babies loved to sleep with their faces pressed up against the bumpers. It scared me and I got tired of checking on them constantly all night long so I bought a breathable bumper and that solved that problem. Myles still has his breathable bumper in his crib because it helps keep his arms and legs inside.

InactiveAmy is right. I love my breathable bumpers. Cooper loves to smoosh his face against whatever he can, the mattress, the side of the crib, his bear, whatever is solid. I think it is a security thing for him, like when he is asleep on my chest and his head is against my chin. Anyway, I have the bumpers and love them. I have the Angelcare monitor too, but we have had to stop using the movement sensor b/c of false alarms, b/c Cooper sleeps up on his knees sometimes and it can’t detect his breathing, and he likes to get in the corner of his crib. I got my bumpers at onestepahead.com

InactiveI just ordered my breathable bumpers! His crib looked so naked without bumpers. Last night I was so paranoid that his little limbs would get stuck so I kept checking a million times. I am exhausted this morning as a result
This morning I said, “Forget that!”AbyPeyton James 5/7/07August 3, 2007 at 1:47 pm #40444Anonymous
InactiveNeither of my girls had bumpers in their beds because I couldn’t get them to work when the mattress was inclined and I never bothered to put them in when we put the mattress back down. They did fine without bumpers. There was one time when Alex stuck her leg through and couldn’t figure out how to get it back in, but she was fine, just angry about it!

InactiveYay! We have been sleeping flat on our tummy for a couple of nights now and doing good! I put the breatheable bumpers on and I am more at ease. Peyton is sleeping 4 hours at a time (almost to 5!) 5 hours at a time is considered sleeping through right? I still worry about the whole tummy thing but I have an angel care monitor, make sure he is not too hot in his crib, and there are no pillows or toys in his crib. Is there anything else I am forgetting to do so that he is safe? I know the whole SIDS thing can happen anytime within the first year but at what months do the risks start to decline?
Can’t wait till we get to sleep longer stretches

InactiveAby,
From what I have read the risk is the highest between 2-4 months and then decreases from there. As soon as he can rollover and has really good head control I think you are pretty much in the clear.August 10, 2007 at 9:32 am #40820Anonymous
InactiveThank you guys so much for suggesting the breatheable bumpers. Whenever I go to nurse Peyton at night he is always laying right next to the bumpers! It’s funny, I start him out on the end of the crib and he seems to scoot to the side. I also made sure that I put the Angel Care monitor right in the middle so that it still picks up his movement when he moves around and doesn’t SCARE ME TO DEATH again!
