InactiveDS will be 20 weeks on Tue.. We have been treating his reflux since around 2mo. It took me that long to figure out it wasn’t what I was eating that was causing the issue(as my formula friendly Ped. was saying
) At that time I had to stop bf’ing b/c I have chronic fatigue & had to go back on my medications. Axid worked great for about a month, he was a brand new man and my CF symptoms were staying under control I was finally enjoying my sweet son vs. enduring/surviving!Fast forward-We have gone from Axid 2x/day to going to ped GI who put him on 7.5mg prevacid 2x/day and 1cc of Axid 4x/day. We are using Gentlease with 1tsp rice/oz. The current med’s/formula worked ok until last week. Suddenly it is a chore to get even 4oz in him(he is 14lbs 5 oz). When he even sees the bottle he gets upset. It’s like overnight he went from having pain/fussyness/difficulty napping but good eater, he was eating 7-8oz so we had to add rice and he took that just fine for 2 weeks ate like a champ. And now he won’t eat w/out screaming, then won’t nap b/c he’s hungry, then fussy b/c he’s tired and hungry and I’m about to fall over in exhaustion!I have tired not adding rice, adding more rice, faster nipple, slower nipple, adding some prune/apple juice, holding him in various ways, distracting him w/toys. I don’t understand, when I finally do get some in him and he spits up, he doesn’t cry or act in pain then, it’s like the only time he seems in pain is when I try to feed him!I have left a lot of middle stuff out trying to make this shorter so hopefully I’ve shared enough info to get some advice or some thoughts on what has suddenly happened! TIA If my siggy doesn’t work my name is DeeDee DS is Jack

InactiveI answered your other post too. It looks like he probably outgrew his Axid dose and the Prevacid has not had time to make a difference yet. Hang in there. It will get better. He may need a higher dose of Prevacid, but 7.5 mgs 2 x’s daily does work for some babies. If he’s not better in two weeks I’d push for a higher Prevacid dose. http://www.marci-kids.com explains the need for higher more frequent PPI dosing for infants.
Also, it may be a good idea to give him the Axid more than once per day for the two weeks that it takes to see the full effect of the Prevacid. As long as you space the two drugs 4 hours apart, it’s fine for him to be getting both meds a few times per day. And/or you could try some Mylanta Cherry Supreme before feedings. I used to give Myles 1-2 mls. It can offer some temporary relief and it is safe for babies. Lots of babies on this board have used it.For my son 10 days on Prevacid turned things around. I hope the big change happens soon for Jack.August 6, 2007 at 3:51 pm #40584Anonymous
InactiveHi there. Sorry to hear that you’re having a hard time with your son. I read your other post, and the problems with feeding are often a classic sign that there’s pain. My daughter showed most of her pain during feeding- I think that if they’re esophagus is really raw, then eating feels like dousing a wound with acid. My daughter eventually stopped eating b/c we couldn’t get her pain under control. I agree with Christine- I’d try a higher dose of PPI. If he’s still in pain, then he likely needs a higher dose, maybe 30mg, if your doc will agree. Once the PPI is doing his job, there’s really no need for him to require both meds. The other thing is to make sure that you’re giving the PPI properly- if it’s a solutab or packets, it needs to be given on an empty stomach and followed up with a meal 30 minutes later to activate the med. My daughter had a feeding aversion- eventually she associated the idea of feeding with pain and she would scream and cry whenever she was presented with the breast/bottle. I hope that you can get a higher dose for your son. Good luck.
