InactiveWe have recently switched Ben to Zegerid (20mg-that’s all insurance would approve) and are having a horrible time giving it to him. He absolutely shrieks like he is in pain. Does anyone have suggestions as to how best to give it? We have tried so many different meds and this is one of the last to try, from what i’m gathering. It is so hard to see him in pain.=( Any suggestions would be great!

InactiveYou could add it to an ounce of his formula but you would have to be sure he eats it all. You can add a flavoring but just stay away from acidic things. I am sorry I am trying to think of different ways but we didn’t have this problem. I would also try and fight insurance over this. If your doctor feels he needs more than he needs to let your insurance company know that. Colt looks like a bird when its time for his zegerid. He loves it. Help others because I am having a brain block. I hope it works for him. Sorry thats the best of help I can be right now.

InactiveI haven’t had to deal with medications just yet but I read somewhere to try putting it directly into the nipple along with just a little formula, just enough to fill the nipple. Seemed like it worked really well for them, maybe it will for you too!

InactiveYou’ve probably tried this but we used a syringe and put it into the side of his mouth put a bit of medicine in, and then held his little chin shut and blew on his nose to help him swallow in the very beginning. Some pharmacies will give you a very tiny (thin) syringe that you could probably use if you wanted. We use a chunkier one now, but he could maybe even suck on one if it was bigger. I mix the zegerid in a shot glass with water and then just give the dosage and keep the rest in the frig until the next dose. I stir it up with the syringe we use to cut down on steps in the whole process. How old is he? If he’s young I would try to give the meds while he’s on an incline….if he’s laying down it mnight be uncomfortable. We gave meds to Lucas while he was in the bouncy seat as a tiny infant, and then while he was sitting up, etc. as he got older. Zegerid worked wonders for us, and hopefully your baby is on a healthy appropriately high dose that will work. Are you giving it multiple times a day? It should be given 2X a day and possibly 3X a day if he’s really young. Good luck! Have you checked out this site? http://www.marci-kids.com it’s got dosing instructions and all sorts of reflux info.

InactiveHi!
Just wanted to add my two cents about Zegerid. It TOTALLY gave us the turnaround we desperately were waiting for so I hope it really works for you. It was SUCH a relief not timing with meals!! Yuck!In the beginning Kate HATED IT and it was seemingly impossible to give it to her but I found the medibottle online and that really was great for us. It’s like a little bottle but a syringe fits inside it. I tried giving it to her with bm but she would never finish it I wasted sooooo much medication that way. Eventually now,she takes it in a syringe in the side of her cheek like the other moms mentioned above and LOVES it. Everytime she sees it she gets excited. It’s so funny,I never thought we would get to a point where giving meds wasn’t a battle but it sure helps when she’s getting THREE doses a day. It was such a nightmare for awhile. Anyway, I hope some of this helps and isn’t too redundant. Good luck!!

InactiveUntil Sarah was around 9 months old, we would put her zegerid in an ounce of formula. It worked great for us. Towards the end Sarah had one ear infection after another and was refusing all of her bottles so out of stress I tried squirting it directly in her mouth and she took it just fine. I was glad not to have 3 extra “medicine” bottles to clean anymore! I know several moms have squirted it directly in from the beginning and were successful (by putting it on the side of their cheek toward the back) so hopefully you’ll find a method that works best for your family.
Oh, I learned the hard way NOT to put the medicine in the bottle until she was ready to drink it. I thought I was being so organized by getting all of her medicine bottles ready the night before…and then I realized the medicine was being degraded before she even got it! Oooops!
Zegerid was WONDERFUL for us and I hope it will be for Ben too!

InactiveWe added mylanta and eventually tums to Justice’s zegerid, but he was on 40 mg and I think he had to have it that way. Zegerid was also great for us, but I have heard because of all the salt it can be hard on babies belly and they have to get used to it. Justice eventually love his zegerid and it was hard to wean him from it. Even now when he sees a syringe he wants meds.

InactiveThank you all for your speedy reply!! We were actually on vacation when I posted it. We have been mixing his with his formula, and it seems to be going soooooo much better!!
It, so far, really is helping him. I just wish the dr or pharmacist had told us we were able to mix it with things. I just assumed you couldn’t b/c you can’t with so many others. Again, thanks everyone!!August 12, 2007 at 6:15 pm #40933Anonymous

InactiveGlad it is working well for you. My Abby has been on it since she was one month old and is 18 months old now and just gets an evening dose (too chicken to take it away just yet). As far as mixing with something, as long as it is not acidic, it should be ok. Dr. Phillips said formula was the best to mix with. We always did the 20mg packets and mixed her dose in with one ounce of formula. Once she went off bottles, we had to try just squirting it in her mouth, which she hated so we switched to the 40mg packets and mixed with Mylanta Cherry Supreme and she just LOVES it!! These kiddos are so crazy and so different. Hope things continue to go well for you and Ben!!
