InactiveWell, we’re back to 22.5 mgs of Prevacid a day. The weaning did not go that well as some of you remember from my previous posts. Initially, she did well on 15 mgs/day so I decided to lower it further to 7.5 mgs and that’s when all the fun began. I upped the dosage to 15 mgs and that didn’t seem to help much. She’s cranky, she chokes on her saliva, and she hasn’t been sleeping well. DH is convinced all of this is b/c she’s teething. I agree, I see another one popping out from under the gums but she vomitted two times. And she hasn’t done that in a while. It was in with a one week interval but I wasn’t happy with her vomitting still. With much hesitation, I decided to up the dosage again. I feel like we’re regressing and not progressing. DH was upset saying “I thought as she got older, the reflux would be better”. Well, so did I. I just don’t want it to be a life long issue for her. Thanks for listening to me complain (yet again).

hi! 10 months is nothing really….does not mean it will be a life long saga. most reflux cases i have heard about where children required PPI treatment, they did not outgrow it until between the age of 18 months-24 months. I have a one and a half year old who is still on 30 mg of prevacid. I am not too worried that this will be a life long thing. dont worry, keep your head up! if your baby is a happy baby on 22.5 mg, then let it be 🙂August 23, 2007 at 5:26 pm #41556Anonymous
InactiveI know that you’re disappointed and that things have been rough lately. Really, try not to worry. Just because she’s not ready now, doesn’t mean that she won’t be ready in a few months. Teething really did cause the most unbelievable havoc for Hailey. The extra drool and the histamines released from the teething caused her reflux to increase exponentially. Sometimes she would gag and vomit from her own saliva. It was horrible. But it will pass. I know that Anne used to give Lucas benadryl while teething, and we did it as well when Hailey was really bad. I hope that this rough patch passes soon. Anyhow, even if it doesn’t go away completely as quickly as you hoped, it WILL get easier and better. Hailey is still on meds at 27 months, but it’s so much easier than it was back then.

InactiveLori, thanks for your support. I guess I’m putting too much pressure on myself to wean her as soon as I possibly can. Every time a family member asks me “why is she still on meds?” I go beserk. I wish I could just brush it off and not take it to heart. I even told my sister (whom I love dearly) that I just love drugging my child with a very annoyed tone of voice. She understood not to ask me that ever again. I think we, the parents, take it too seriously, more than we really should. I gotta tell you though, I used to be one of those people who went “tsk, tsk, meds for a child this young?? no good”. Boy, did this experience teach me a thing or two…

InactiveWell I just have to add that at least she did well with the 15 mg for awhile. Thats a good sign. And when Adriana is teething she is bad too.
I know how you feel with the med questions from people. I always ask, “Have you ever had heart burn or acid reflux… well how would you like to have a burning throat and upset stomach 24 hours a day and be unable to eat or sleep?” Then they usually shut up.(I can be forward LOL)August 24, 2007 at 6:12 am #41573Anonymous
InactiveHugs Marianna. When people make unhelpful comments that put pressure on you to conform to their ideas, maybe just reply that the drugs are the things that are making Ariella super cute so you don;t really want to stop them! That will keep them thinking.

InactiveMarianna,
Nobody understands until they’ve had to walk in your shoes. I used to silently judge people for all kinds of things that I never do now. Our experience with Hailey has been humbling. Even when Hailey’s feeding aversion was at it’s worst and she screamed 24/7 and never slept, dh’s family (whom I love dearly) used to say all kinds of hurtful things especially about her being on meds and her “supposed feeding problems” which were attributed to me being a bad mother and a bad cook. So I know how you feel. It’s awful to have people who should support you pass judgment on you. Finally I just had to remind myself that no one WANTS their baby on meds-but no one wants their baby with esophagitis, a feeding aversion, and all the sequela that goes along with that. Believe me. The meds prevent her problem from being worse than what it would otherwise be.People will never understand unless they have to live the situation- even family. It’s true of babies with reflux, and for everything else in this world. You are doing the best that you can. We understand when no one else does, so come here for support. You don’t need to place so much pressure on yourself, b/c in the end, it’s something that you have no control over. I’m sure that you’ll be able to wean soon. HUGS.s&h’s mum2007-08-24 09:19:07

InactiveThank you ladies for your never ending support. I just came from my inlaws in tears. I dropped Ariella off at their place and my mother in law starts “the” conversation again. I went off on her saying that I’m tired of them pressuring me to give up the medication. She threw up last night again, she did not go to bed until 1 am….and her last nap was at 2:30. Clearly, she’s bothered by it. She was screaming, arching her back and burping constantly. COME ON!!! I told her that she’s staying on it for as long as she should and she goes “well, you’re doing it b/c it’s convinient for you to just shup her up”. WHAT??? To shut her up?? How about to make her more comfortable?? If she’s that fussy, obviously she’s in pain. I’m sorry if I can’t see my child in pain. I’m not that cruel. I’m pregnant and I’m exhausted b/c she’s been cranky for the past 3 days and NOT sleeping. I’m sorry for rambling on. Thank you again. I just needed to vent. I was very rude a few times they began the conversation and every time they say “that’s it, that’s the last time we say anything”. It must be old age thing as they keep forgetting they promise to stay out of it.

InactiveI am so sorry Marianna. I can only ditto what Lori said. Seth is still on 30mg of Prevacid and he is going on 3 and he still refluxes ON the meds. I am not even thinking of trying to wean him anytime soon. I would much rather he be on meds than have the side effects of NOT being properly medicated. It’s a shame you do not have any support with this from family. Ariella is still very young and since she was able to even go any length of time at a lower dose is a sign you are at least going in the right direction. I would not be too discouraged yet.

InactiveKeep up the good work with Ariella!! Maybe you should tell you husband to have a talk with his parents. Or else just make it clear that you do not want to discuss it anymore ever again!! You are a great mom and are doing what ever you need to in order to keep your child pain free!

InactiveHey Marianna, I totally sympathize. We are in the same boat here. Every time I even think of reducing his meds. something comes up. Right now it’s a cold. I’m pretty tired of getting the “He’s still on medicine ?” comments too. But, I do know there is an end in sight as my daughter is evidence of it. Hang in there.. every time I get down about it, I try to remember those early, screaming all day, baby in constant pain days, and then I look at how good and happy he is now… it gets a little easier to handle then!
