InactiveMy daughter has been on Alimentum (RTF for 2 days, canned the rest) for a week now and she is not tolerating it very well. She can’t sleep and wakes up spitting up. And her burps are very violent. The worst is when she wakes up in the morning screaming from needing to poo. That has been her problem from the start. She has always been very gassy and after trying Goodstart Supreme and then Soy she stopped pooping all together. So the dr put her on Alimentum thinking she had an intolerance. Now I hear that it could possibly be the Prevacid she is on (she is 9lbs 4oz and on 3/4 of a 15mg tablet once a day) that has been causing all her tummy problems and not the formulas. I am so confused and don’t know what to do. I have seen 3 different drs in my office and all have been sending me in different directions. I have been told that the ready to feed is better on them but I can’t afford that. I can hardly afford the canned. Any advice?

InactiveYou are not alone in feeling confused. There are so many variables that it’s hard to know what’s causing what. Plus sometimes you think it’s reflux when in fact it might be tummy issues. I think that your dr can order testing of your baby’s stool sample to determine if in fact there is a true milk allergy or intolerance. I have not personally dealt with that but maybe someone who has can chime in. I do know that my GI told me that in some babies PPI’s like Prevacid can cause stomach cramps and constipation so she puts those babies back on an H2 blocker like Axid instead of a PPI. My son is on Good Start and Prevacid and sometimes it seems like it’s painful for him to poop but he manages to get 1-2 poops out every day so right now, I’m not planning to change it but I understand your concerns. Maybe you could trial Axid instead of Prevacid and see if your baby does better. But maybe give the formula change some more time before you try that.

Inactiveif you are using solutabs, i would get a different form of prevacid (aspartame is notorious for causing stomach upsets, it is also a known neurotoxin
http://suewidemark.netfirms.com/blaylock.htm), and also make sure the dose is correct…then if the uncomfortable crying moments continue, i would switch to neocate. just my 2 cents!~August 31, 2007 at 8:08 pm #41997Anonymous
InactiveIt is hard to tell sometimes if it is reflux or milk intolerance or meds that can cause these stomach upsets. The pulling up/in of the legs and grunting and groaning is a general pain response in infants and does not always signal staomach pain. Alana had all these stomach problems until we were on pepti junior (like alimentum), a high enough dose of PPI and seeing a chiropractor. Of course it could be something in the prevacid, so I would probably ask for Zegerid at the marci kids dose and see if that helps and if not then look at the formual issue again. In the meantime regualr stomach masssage can really help with constipation and difficulty pooping as well.. Goodluck

InactiveWhen we first started Sarah on alimentum, she had diarrhea for a few days and acted like it was the worst thing I could have ever given her. Thankfully within a week her system leveled out and we had NO problems after that. Give it a little more time and then see if things get better. GOOD LUCK!

InactiveI would keep her on the alimentum as well. Only because there is no reason that i know of.. that she would do better on any of the other formulas (except neocate) then alimentum. So i would atleast stay w/the alimentum. The other things I would do concerning the formula.. is just TRY the RTF. Only because it could be the THIN consistency of the alimentum powder that is making her reflux worse. I would try it ..just to find out if that is what you are dealing with. Then you can maybe try getting your ped’s office to give you tons of samples.. and buying it on ebay for MUCH cheaper.
Also Possibly changing to a high dosage of axid/pepcid (h2 blocker).. or Zegerid (a different PPI) could help with any cramps that she might be experiencing w/the prevacid. If you decide to try the RTF.. i would try this afterwards.I hope it helps! Let us know what you decide to do..and how she is doing! -
