InactiveBen started running one yesterday morning. He cut his third tooth this past week (his upper left lateral incisor – WEIRD), but it looks like the three other uppers are trying to come in too. So, most likely this fever is teething related??? I’m only asking because I just took it again (temporally), and it’s 100.8. Doesn’t that seem too high for a teething fever?
He had a cold recently too, and notoriously has gotten ear infections after any cold in the past. So, I’m worried that an ear infection could causing the fever too.Any ideas on how to know the difference?September 1, 2007 at 6:42 pm #42025Anonymous
InactiveNo ideas(still anxiously awaiting the teething saga to begin. SO excited!
)but I was wondering if his temp was a rectal or armpit? If it was rectal, that’s a real low-grade.(you probably already know that
) Anyway, hope Ben’s fever breaks soon. Fevers always make me nervous not that you should be nervous!!
I’m always nervous!

InactiveIt doesnt seem tooo high.. I have heard of light fevers running w/teething. I wouldnt be too concerned unless it gets higher..and he acts like he might have an ear infection.
I hope these teeth pop through soon! And that it doesnt end up being another ear infection!

InactiveClaire, CUTE picture of Kate!!!
I took the temp. temporally. It’s one of those scanner things that you just run across their forehead. As far as I know, it’s their actual temperature. You don’t have to add or subtract a degree.September 1, 2007 at 9:52 pm #42045Anonymous
InactiveTaylor usually runs a temperature of 100 to 100.8 when she teeths as well. When she is sick though she runs temperatures of 103 to 104s. Teething is horrible with her and she is the slowest teether, she will have symptoms low grade temps for weeks before a tooth pops out!

InactiveNaomi- Kate says thank, thank you!
Do you like that thingy you use to take his temp?(sorry, don’t know the name)I was thinking of getting one just b/c I’m terrible at math and I always get confused on what to add or subtract or what.

InactiveLooks like we’re in the same boat! Sarah was running a low grade fever today too! She woke up crying from both her naps and I checked her temp…sure enough!! My question…that some people have answered sort of…is whether teething CAN cause a fever. It’s never happened before, but all we’re waiting on now are pesky eye teeth and molars. I know those can be tough ones…
Anyway, ear infections can cause a fever BUT for Sarah it never did. She had recurrent ear infections for months before her tubes but she never had a fever to go along with it. Since Ben has had an ear infection before (several if I remember correctly…) I’d use his previous symptoms as more of a judge than just the fever.
Hopefully for both of us the slight fever is just teeth and nothing more!!!
Claire – I also have the temporal scanner and LOVE it!! It was costly but definitely worth it and VERY quick!!!

InactiveWe just brought a temporal scanner and the instructions say they run 1 degree higher than axillary taking (under the armpit).
Alana has had a temp on and of for the last 2 weeks (they think she has had influenza because its running rampant here at the moment…..on top of that a bad case of croup which saw us in the ER for awhile). Anyhow….the advice I got is that if she is happy enough…eating, drinking etc then its not to much to worry about. And really once she got over the croup she picked up despite continuing to run a temperature. There was no sign of an infection anywhere at that stage. When she started to get crabby again last week I took her to the Dr and double ear infection. So I guess they were right if there is a temp and the behaviour is different then something is probably up.That all being said, I would say Alana runs a very low grade fever when she is teething…just above the normal but never higher than 38 degrees celsius- taken under th arm (sorry I don’t know what that is in Farenheight)September 2, 2007 at 2:07 pm #42068Anonymous
InactiveClaire – I LOVE the temporal scanner. Definitely worth the money. It’s so fast. I could never get my kids to sit still long enough for the other types either. we had the ear one first, but I never felt like I got in in their ear the right way. I always got wacky readings with it.
Anyway… I think we are going to take him in to the doctor. He is acting REALLY cranky, and now having trouble eating and nursing… which could all be teething related, of course, but knowing his history, I just want to be sure.. He crawls across the floor, stops, puts his head down and just wails. Poor little guy. His fever still isn’t too high, but he normally runs about a degree lower than “normal,” so the 100.8 is pretty high for him.Bensmama2007-09-02 14:08:27

InactiveOh, and I meant to add earlier…
Amy, as far as I understand, the medical community is a bit divided on the whole teething/fever thing. Some say they go hand in hand and others argue that when little ones are teething, their systems are overwhelmed and can’t fight off viruses, etc. very well, so they are more likely to get a virus that causes a fever or diarrhea (another common teething symptom). -
