InactiveHi, I replied to your other post. And asked about your dose. I suspect it is a little to low to be of any real effect. This was all my pead originally prescribed and I ended up going blubbering to my GP who changed it to Zoton and upped the dose. Thankfully!

InactiveMy pead was really helpful with the MSPI stuff and still is. I didn’t find her so helpful with the reflux… she was probably a grow out of it kind of one…and she reluctantly went to the losec after quite awhile (but only at 10mg). In the end I just didn’t feel it worth the battle and ended up going to the GP….luckily he was a less conservative one. I still had a little battle with the dosage initiailly but just did my own thing in the end which he never questioned. Myabe your GP will be more open as well, perhaps take him/her the marci kids stuff.
Are you thickening with the karicare thickener…one of my friends acutally had quite a bit of success with it. We never did, I found it more effective to use a variable flow teat…have it slower for the first bit of the feed when Alana was hungry and tended to gulp and slurp and then have it a bit faster as she slowed down. Dr Browns bottles also helped in the beginning. I had to buy them online…as I am in a regional area….but you might be able to source them near you?September 8, 2007 at 9:47 pm #42355Anonymous
InactiveMy son has silent reflux and this sounds a lot like him. I breastfeed and in the beginning, when he was newborn, he would pull off and scream even though he was so hungry! He’s also a big boy – from what I understand, the breastmilk works as an antacid, so he wanted to eat all the time, though he only ate a little at a time, so there was a lot of feedings. I also had an overactive letdown, so I had to pump a little before I fed him each time. I also think he has MSPI and an allergy to eggs…it’s all SO much fun…note sarcasm 🙂
I feel for you, I really do. A thought – they say reflux peaks at 4 months, so maybe that’s why you had a little break and then it revved up again? At exactly 16 weeks my son started showing symptoms again, so we had to increase his dosage by quite a bit. Now he’s happy again.
Give your medicine some time to work. It takes a few weeks, at least, to see the full effects. My son is a TOTALLY changed man.
Good luck!

InactiveIt does sound like reflux, dose sounds too low, and my second refluxer didn’t really show signs until 2 weeks either. I have no idea why that is though. I wish I could be of more help.

InactiveHi again. I know compounds get a bad press, but….perhaps you could try and find a pharmacy that compound the losec accordign to the marci-kids guidelines? I wonder if I am ever in this situation again if I might give it a try. Of course you would have to be pretty specific with the pharmacy and hope they follow the instructions to the letter. OR you could email marci-kids and ask them if you can buy some caracream and make your own compound….I don’t know if it will get through customs, but Its worth a try.
I have always had a big bubba myself so I hear your frustrations re the drs commenting on it. One of the drs had the cheek one day to be suprised that she was crawling so early because “big babies often have more trouble”!September 9, 2007 at 1:56 pm #42375Anonymous
InactiveI think the MSPI definitely runs in families. I was “allergic” (my mom called me allergic, I think I was just intolerant) to milk until I was 8. My mom breastfed me, but didn’t make the connection until much later, and I was a “colicky” baby until 9 months. My daughter was MSPI, though not nearly as bad as my son is now. I could still eat butter and didn’t have to look for hidden ingredients with her (and she was over it by 1 year old), and now my diet is sooooooo limited. But it’s worth it. I would definitely give the elimination diet a try. It’s interesting because I now am so much more informed about what’s in all the foods we used to buy, and there’s a lot I’ll never buy again…processed food is terrible! Keeping it simple is so much healthier.
Anyway, good luck. At least you have some things to try! Let us know how it goes.

Inactiveyes – it sounds like it to me! my son has silent reflux & he gulps & you can hear it hitting his tummy, he also arches back away from the bottle. screams through feedings. he’ll have a good day or 2 here & there & then go right back to the screaming episodes. so…sounds like it to me!

InactiveWe live in Canada and have been using CaraCream. We’ve had no problems with it going through customs, not sure what your system is like though. You can go to a compounding pharmacy and have them make it exactly like marci-kids suggests- BUT ask for a printout of ALL the ingredients that were in there. Sorry if I sound paranoid and insane. It’s just that our pharmacy told me that we had an unflavoured suspension made by marci-kids specs, and when I asked for a printout, I saw that they added all kinds of sweeteners and bitter-stops. Meanwhile, my daughter got worse b/c the meds didn’t work. The problem with properly compounded losec is that it tastes SO bitter and salty that you can vomit!!! Honestly terrible. Compounded prevacid tastes a bit better b/c the med isn’t as bitter. Good luck.
