InactiveI’m hoping to get a little insight into this-
Niko is 8 months, but only taking in about 22 oz per day of neocate (over 6 bottles!) – her pedi gi suggested switching her to the neocate jr because it is higher calorie. I went on the neocate site to order, but found both jr. and 1+. What’s the difference? Is one tolerated better than the other?
Another thing is- is this a good idea in the first place? I want Niko to be getting more calories, but isn’t she too young for the follow-up formula? Isn’t it 1+ for a reason?

InactiveMaybe someone else can chime in BUT I *think* the neocate jr is sort of like the Enfamil “Next Step” which is the 9+ months formula that can go up to 24 mos. The 1+ I think should technically start by age 1. Please don’t ask me the difference in the 2 formulas though. I just think that with her age, you’d want to go with jr. There must be something significant about it.
However, I think I remember reading a post long ago from someone saying their lo didn’t tolerate jr. or 1+ b/c of something in it and I remember a thread on this….
I just wish I could magically dig it up for you…October 6, 2007 at 2:50 pm #43837Anonymous
InactiveHi…
I have an old post on this.. i will try and find it for you if i get a sec..
you can look for it in the seach menu and put in neocate junior..not REALLY sure of the difference. But my son did the vanilla flavored ELECARE and he vomitted from it.. so, in our case the vanilla ones upset his stomach.I’ll try and find the post for you…October 6, 2007 at 3:02 pm #43838Anonymous
Inactiveo.k.. i just went back to try and find it.. and its gone! haha.. i looked at all my past posts and cant find it either! i know i did ask moms what the difference was a while back.. OH WELL!
Anyhow.. this is what i can remember.. one of them is for malabsorbtion and other problems as well. And i think that ended up being the neocate junior. And the neocate 1+ was the next step one. I can be wrong, and it could be the other way around.. so if you look at the neocate website and click on both of the formulas they will give you a download on what both of them are for…I dont think its harmfull doing the one that is for malabsorbtion.. i think it might fill them more..since its a bit heavy on fats.October 6, 2007 at 3:08 pm #43839Anonymous
Inactivehaha.. i just went to the website..here is the 1+ page… http://neocate.com/aaa_neocate/701-neocate-products-Neocate-One-+.html
and here is the junior page http://neocate.com/aaa_neocate/702-neocate-products-Neocate-Junior.htmlboth of them say for after age one! you might want to ask you ped about that.. and/or see if any other moms have any other info. or experience with it.October 6, 2007 at 9:28 pm #43859Anonymous
InactiveOk. We started Neocate Jr at about 11 months, tehn switched to Neoacte 1 +.
Here is my story.Neocate Jr has extra vitamins and a lots of fat,; it is speciailly enhanced for babies with malabsortion problems.Neocate 1 plus is just regular formula formulated for older kids and most of the calories (energy) comes from carbohydrates.Kendra has DGE, so teh fat in Noeacte jr was making her vomit ALL THE TIME. Sh ejust couldn’t digest it very well. She also needed extra water as it takes very little water to disolve the JR.Noecate one + has been very well tolerated by Kendra. She is now 23 pounds and growing. She vomits here and there, but not AS BAD AS she did with the Jr. Elecare is very similar to the Jr and she vomited that too.BOTH FORMULA are 30 calories per ounce, soo it does not matter what you pick, your baby will still be getting the same amount of calories.I started out mixing it 22 calories per ounce, then worked my way up to 30 calories per ounceif your baby has no problems with malabsortion, i would start with the Neocate 1 plus.Good luck. I hope it works for you.leoOctober 8, 2007 at 3:27 pm #43951Anonymous
Inactivethank you guys so much for the input. The Neocate website is not that informative.
We got a can of Neocate Jr. chocolate from the pedi gi just to try- and let me say, one bottle is all we could stand of the stuff. It smells even worse than the unflavored stuff (impossible I thought) and made the baby totally spazzed out and wired. (perhaps it is the 7% by volume artificial flavors).
I’m going to order the 1+ tomorrow and hope she does ok with it.
leo, I know Kendra is on G-tube, but does she drink as well? has the erythromycin helped with her hunger? I’m sort of at my wits end with trying to get the babe fed- it seems to be getting worse every day.

InactiveWe are 27 months and still on Neocate Infant. DS3 just does not tolerate any other form of Neocate.

InactiveThis is good to know! Thanks for sharing your stories Leo, Lauren and Brenda! I have been wondering lately what we should do when Paige turns one.

I have to say that kendra did not like it very much. She was 7 months old and on breast millk before she started Neocate. She would drink 1 to 2 ounces a a time and that was it.I have tried those flavors packets that SHS sells (the neocate people) and she had a rash from them. is your baby drinking 22 ounces of neocate or her old formula? if she is still drinking her old formula. I would transition her slowlly. Try one ounce neocate mix with the other formula for a day or two. then 1 1/2 ounces and so on. You can also try mixing it with some baby food fruit if she is taking solids, like bananas. If that doesn’t work there is this website some moms have bought liquid flavors fromu and they said have helped. http://www.frontiernet.com ( i amp pretty sure this is the website, if that doesn’t work, i ‘ll try lookingit up again). I tried a couple myself w/o luck.I believe the erothiminis (sp?) is helping a lot, it is worth a try. If you do try the ero, i would also give her some hypollergenic probitoics. i get mine from this website http://www.kirman.com. look under products, then probiotic. What reflux meds in she on? getting the pain under control is very important.Hang in there. Dealing with this situation is pretty tuff, but it does get better. Let me know if i can help some more.hugsLeokendramom 2007-10-09 07:33:11 October 9, 2007 at 1:33 pm #44006Anonymous
InactiveLeo,
Niko has been on Neocate for about 3 months. She was doing great with intake in August, then around Labor day, her bottles dropped off to about 4 oz each, and going down. the last few days she’ll take 2 oz and stop. (we were at 15 oz for the day yesterday). We’re getting really worried here.
For pain, she’s been on Prevacid solutabs 30mg / day since June, but over the last month, her pain has been getting much worse. Maybe add Zantac? Not sure where we go from here.
I saw your post in another topic regarding probiotics- Do you give Kendra both biogaia and the kirkman one? why? I think we need to get on the probiotic bandwagon too.

InactiveHi there,
my guess/suggestion will be to change her prevacid solutab to zegerid or something else w/o lactose or aspartame in it. Kendra was on the prevacid solutab for 13 months w/o a whole lot of improvment. We ended up needing a Ng tube b/c of the same reasons you mentioned. she was slowly refusing to drink until she just started loosing wt. I DON’T WANT TO SCARE YOU. I would try changing meds at this point. I have learned that with reflux not one method always works. If one is not working TRY ANOTHER, specially when it comes to meds. Changing can be a pain, but for us it was worth it. 2 weeks after changing from Prevacid solutab to Zegerid Kendra’s poos stopped being mucosy and watery. She is happier and seems more ineterested in food. Now she is a bit consptipated, which other moms have told me the zegerid will do that. I would take a bit of constipation than mucosy, watery poos.i would add the zantac. Kendra is still on 1.5ml of zantac plus the zegerid. The combination combo has been better for Kendra. We tried a higher dose of prevacid and THIS MADE HER SICK. She was vomiting a lot and cried almost all day for 3 days straight before i figured out it was teh higher dose of prevacid. we stopped, so did her crying.i use both probiotics, b/c one targets specifically tummy/gut pain (biogia) and the other has a different variety strains of good bacterias, which kendra can really use. It seems to be beneficial for kendra.I understand your fustration. I have been there. If your ped doesn’t want to change her meds, go to another one. I hope her discomfort improves soon.Leokendramom2007-10-09 14:04:43

Inactiveone more question: has shse had any type of testing done?
Upper GI can be helpful? this will rule out any anatomical problems. is none invasive.

InactiveThank you guys for helping me through this. I’m really freaked out and all this input means so much to me.
Niko has had an upper and lower gi done- showed some inflamation in the stomach and a hiatal hernia, but the biopsies came back fine.
our doc is great and gave us a script for Zegerid- we have 29 packets sitting on my table- problem is, she wouldn’t take it. We tried this past week-end and it was a screaming fit morning and night, and then we gave up and went back to Prevecid (which she loves, but doesn’t seem to be helping enough. Do you have any good tips for getting the babe to accept Zegerid- I’m certainly willing to try again.

Inactiveanother mom ( i can’t remember her name now) puts the zegerid dose in one ounce of formula, gives it to her child ( make sure the whole ounce is gone), then give her/his the rest.
what did they suggest for the inflamattion? did they say why she has this? i supposed they fixed the hernia? the inflammation can give her tummy aches. The probiotic may help a bit.i sure hope she’ll take the zegerid for you. It might make a different.hugs -
