My son started on zantac one week ago. It seemed to help the first few days after he started it, but he seems to be regressing. During the first few days on zantac, his crying decreased significantly and his sleep improved. However, he is crying again and his sleep is not as consistent as last week. Is it common for a medication to work initially during the first few days and then stop? Will it get better again? My doctor said that it could take up to two weeks for zantac to work. Should I wait that long? He seems to be in pain.

Hi there,

I think it is very common for Zantac to only work for a short time, either because babies can get immune to it quickly or because they outgrow the dose quickly. With my first son, we got 2 or 3 good days out of it. With my second son, we got ONE good day. Then we moved onto Prevacid and things have been better. We do, however, still use Zantac in the middle of the day (Prevacid morning and bedtime).

I would definitely ask the doc about Prevacid or another PPI as soon as you can.
