InactiveWe are on zegerid and I don’t know what results look like. She slept better in her naps today, but she still cries all of the time she is awake. She still makes dolphin sounds in her sleep and when she eats she seems a little more comfortable but still cries and pulls off some. I hate to get off of zegerid since it is so easy to time with meals. Prevacid solutabs are our next option but giving it to her 30 minutes before eating will be a chore since she will cry that entire 30 minutes. Any suggestions on what constitutes an improvement? Should it be dramatic? We have been on it 3 weeks with a slight setback due to antibiotics for an infection.

InactiveI can’t tell you what results look like from Zegerid, but with the solutabs it took us many dose adjustments to finally have a happy baby who doesn’t cry unless he is hungry or tired or now falls from standing the usual things babies cry about. No more fighting during feeds and even though sleep still isn’t great he started taking naps and is sleeping better at night. It can take up to 2 weeks to see a good change and looking at your dose I am just guessing but your dose may be too low, some of the other moms on Zegerid need to chime in about dose as I have no clue here, just looks low to me. HTH.

InactiveFirst off, let me start by saying that I’m definitely not a zegerid expert as we can’t get it in Canada. But, we’ve been using prevacid in CaraCream which is similar from what I understand.
After 3 weeks on the zegerid, as long as she’s not still sick from the virus, you can pretty much expect that the effect of the medicine is as good as it’s going to get on that dose. Some people talk about 14 days, but we’ve been told that for immediate release PPIs, the effects are quicker, but who knows. My feeling is that if the zegerid is working well, and the dose is enough, the baby should be comfortable for the most part. That doesn’t mean that she won’t have crying spells, but she certainly shouldn’t be crying for most of the day. They should also really be able to feed well. That means no pulling off and screaming or arching. Since you’re BF, it can be hard to tell if the pulling off is due to other BF issues or due to reflux, but really, I found that when Sarah (my nonrefluxer) pulled off due to OAL, she seemed frustrated but not in agony, and when Hailey (my refluxer) pulled off due to reflux, she was arching, screaming, coming back as if she was starving but being tortured. Hopefully someone can give you more help about BF a refluxer if you need it. You can always start another thread as well.Based on your siggy, I would guess that the dose is too low… I’m assuming that it’s 12mg a day. Do you give it all in one dose or do you split it? If you’re splitting it, it might be that he’s not getting enough per dose. I believe that each dose has to be at least 3.5ml to ensure that there’s enough buffer, but I could be wrong. Also, zegerid can be tricky at first to try to figure out how to prepare it correctly I’ve heard. Are you using the 20mg packets or the 40mg packets? My guess would really be that the overall dose isn’t high enough, but I’m not sure what the dosing is for a 6 week old. I would check out http://www.marci-kids.com for more dosing info. Then I would ask the doc for an increase. You might also want to try emailing Dr. Phillips to ensure that you’re preparing it properly if none of the “zegerid experts” come on here to help further. He often will call doctors and talk to them directly about dosing.October 12, 2007 at 8:48 pm #44167Anonymous
InactiveHello. My name is Katie and I’m a new mom to 7 1/2 month old Evie. I was very much in your shoes a few months back. I am responding to you b/c I realized that everyone’s experience is so different, and if I could just help out by sharing my story, you may relate to what I went through…
One thing that a lot of us have in common, is that we brought home a delightful little bundle of joy that we could brag to others about how “good” our babies were. Then, after about two weeks of bliss, a new crab apple emerges. Babies are screaming for hours a day, during and after feedings. They are arching their backs, spitting up, procectile vomiting, refusing to eat, having apnea episodes, suddenly waking from sleep and whaling. They spend most of their day crying and you spend most of your day wondering what could be wrong.Moms have a whole host of fresh ideas for what can even minimally soothe/improve their baby. Some of us use swings, inclined mattresses, vaccuum cleaners, tucker slings, babywearing, stomach sleeping
, thickening feeds, formula changes, different meds, rides in the car etc.For me, Evie had a lot of the above symptoms, but didn’t spit up or vomit. After reading Dr. Sears Baby Book’s ‘colic’ chapter over 100 times, I figured that Evie must have silent reflux. Our ped was very supportive and ordered all of the obligitory tests to confirm/deny reflux. They started with the barium swallow upper GI series. Although there were no visible signs of reflux, at least we had the confirmation there was no blockage. So we also had a cranial ultra sound ( I still don’t really know what that was for) but in the meantime we tried the Zantac, which provided no relief, and switched to Prevacid ( I snuck the marci-kids dose just to see if it would work)and timed it appropriately before meals(meanwhile, I am also, in the meantime, learning SOOOO much from infantreflux.org). I think I was on, like, day 11 and nothing was changing. I remember posting on here, “When will I see a change?” and I kind of got the feeling that I should’ve seen results by now. Anyhow, I should mention that I was also bf and on the total elimination diet, (cheerios and rice milk were my staple, I loved it)I had pumped for about a week somewhere along the line to try Nutramagin, and again, like so many others, we honeymooned and then it became worse than ever. It wasn’t until I finally actually got my appointment with the ped GI in Orlando, that they told me Evie did not have reflux. They told me to stop taking Prevacid immediately and offered me 3 cans of Neocate to sample. I struggled with this and did not want to give up bf. However, as Evie turned around 12 weeks, I just did it. I knew I was going back to work and was going to transition her anyways, so I fed her the Neocate. I had that “new baby” that everyone talks about when they finally found their cure. Evie is still on Neocate and doing wonderful. She eats oatmeal, all of the fruits and veggies now, Cheerio’s, and cut up green beans. My interpretation of what happened to Evie is that she had MSPI which really aggravated any possible refluxing. Once the food wasn’t an issue, there was never any reflux either. I also believe that Evie had true colic (I know, I hear you all getting mad!) She would get overstimulated so easily. It was like after 20 minutes of semi-happy morning time, the rest of the day was then ruined. OK, I can’t believe how much I actually just typed, and if anyone will read this, but I think I’m going to “Save” my story to look back at one day. I do not advocate giving up bf for formula by any means, but sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do. Besides, it was nice for me to eat normal again!!!I can tell you that you will probably find all you will ever need to know about what’s going on with your baby from this website. Whether it is medical information or just support, you can find it. No matter how many years of schooling our peds all have, I am convinced that MOMS are the true experts. -
