InactiveMy 7 month old daughter has been diagnosed with severe reflux sine 4 weeks old. She is allergic to milk. She is having ear tubes put in tomorrow. Can anyone shed some light on the risks of putting a gerd baby under anesthesia? PLEASE I am scared to death…

InactiveI’m sorry that your little one is having to do this. I honestly don’t know if GERD babies are higher risk when it comes to anesthesia, but I just wanted to let you know my first gerdling had the same surgery at 9 months, and everything went fine. Good luck!

InactiveI am not sure if the anesthesia was the same or not, but landen went under anesthesia for an endoscopy a couple of months ago and he did fine and he reacts to all sorts of things. I was really nervous about this, but with the technology they have, it is amazing what they can do to counteract reactions. I was told it is like “flying an airplane” lol. I know it is terribly nerve-racking. try to hang in there!!

InactiveMy son has severe reflux and has had seven successful surgeries.
So no worries. Since they have to fast before surgery, their tummy is very empty and there’s less chance of them refluxing during the surgery. The ear tube surgery is very quick. When Bryce had it done, From the time I handed him over to the anesthesiologist to the time I went to the recovery room to find him awake was only like 15 minutes! So they aren’t out for long at all. Good luck tomorrow!October 10, 2007 at 10:39 am #44044Anonymous
InactiveDitto above comments. The surgery is so fast and they are under anesthesia fro such a short time it is very low risk for aspiration due to reflux and like mentioned directions for the surgery does not allow food or water after a certain time that their tummy is very empty. Taylor had tubes placed when she was 1 year old and Alexis had her tonsils and adenoids removed along with tube placement at 22 months, both girls with very bad reflux at the time and no problems with aspiration. Good Luck!

InactiveDitto. Hailey’s had general twice and sedation. The ear tubes surgery was very quick and simple. Well worth it. Good luck.

InactiveMy DS had his first set of tubes put in right before his first birthday and his reflux was still really bad then and we had no problems. The worst part was when he was coming out of anesthesia (crying, thrashing around) but apparantly that is fairly common but we were not told before hand so it was scary. Ironically, he just got his second set so we were braced this time for afterwards and he was FINE! Good luck with the surgery….

InactiveThank you to all..we are home and the surgery went well. They had 2 specialists go over her med history and stay by her side during the surgery. She had a problem afterwards, due to the gas. She was burping, hiccuping, and screaming. I thankfully had an extra dose of Zantac, and some gas relief drops, so she is doing better now. Thank you again….
