Well, Levi started the new Prilosec prescription on Tuesday. He also started a new probiotic on Sunday. So, yesterday, he had a really hard time with his afternoon nap, waking up after 30 minutes or so crying, went back to sleep and when he woke up an hour later, he was really crying and upset. Really cranky for about an hour or so after he got up. Then last night he woke up at 11:30 for a bottle (usually sleeps
until at least 2 or 3 or even later) and then woke up again at
5:25 and didn’t go back to sleep. Again, he has been sleeping
until 6 or later, even 7 a few days earlier in the week. This
morning he had a liquidy, softer poop (have been normal poops)
and another one this afternoon. When I took his diaper off this
afternoon to change him, the skin around his anus was not only
red, but bleeding!!! Both sides had blood seeping out. I just
wanted to cry because I’m sure it was extremely painful.
Now, my first thought was that it was the probiotic but then a
little while ago, I’m thinking it might be the Prilosec. Maybe
there’s not enough buffer? Should I try Mylanta Supreme shortly
after the Prilosec? I tried to go to sleep but it started
worrying me so much, I had to post. Any help or ideas would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

InactiveHi Julie, I’m wondering if it could be a virus. My next thought is that it may be the probiotic… maybe it has dairy products in it that he can’t tolerate. I’m less inclined to blame it on the prilosec, only b/c he’s been on it for a while before this new refill, if I remember correctly. Not enough buffer wouldn’t cause diarrhea, but certainly would affect how well the meds work.
Sorry, not much advice. I would eliminate one of the variables at a time until you find the culprit. Good luck.October 20, 2007 at 3:58 pm #44512Anonymous
InactiveI don’t know about the virus, he doesn’t seem to feel bad otherwise. The probiotics really shouldn’t have anything in them that he can’t tolerate, but I’ve stopped giving it to him for the time being. Thank you for your input!

InactiveI think I posted this before, but my son had bad gas when he was on a probiotic. This one did not contain any dairy, but still caused him gas. Our Chiropractor, who gave the probiotic to Carter did say that they could cause some gas. After I cut the dose in half, he did much better.
