InactiveHi, my name is Cindy, and i have a 6 month old with silent reflux. He is currently on Prevacid (15 mg/day) and he was doing great up until a couple of days ago. I don’t know what is up, he’s arching his back, not drinking as much, uncomfortable, spitting up more etc., just plain unhappy. Could a growth spurt be making his reflux worse? (he’ll be 6 months in a couple of days) I know he is teething, but this is his second tooth coming in and he wasn’t this bad with his first one.
I started cereal with him about 2-3 weeks ago, he did okay with the rice, a little uncomfortable with it. About 5 days ago I switched him to barley and he’s taking it great, but could this be the cause of his regression? Woudn’t I have seen it when we first gave it to him and not just the last couple of days?
Any ideas? I know he has gained weight, but I didn’t think Prevacid was really that weight dependent.
He drinks Alimentum (I don’t really know that he has any allergies or sensitivity to anything, but we gave it to our dd for her silent reflux and it worked well).
Thanks for your help.

InactiveHello, welcome!! Prevacid is weight dependent!! If he was doing fine before that is probably what it is. All acid meds are weight dependent, and when they grow out of their dosage some if not all their symptoms start coming back. How much does he weigh? 15mg seems really low for a 6 month old. http://www.marci-kids.com as a lot of info regarding acid meds and dosage based on weight. Regarding the barley, not sure, but I know that when we started something that didn’t agree with Emma’s tummy we seen symptoms the same day, sometimes the next day. I wouldn’t think 5 days, hopefully others will chime in on that!!
What tooth is coming in? The top teeth are aweful and motrin is great for teething, they say they can start taking that at 6 months.

InactiveHmmm…Are you giving the Prevacid any differently than before? It has to be given 2 hrs after and 30 minutes before a full meal. You’ve probably been doing that, but I thought I’d mention it just in case.
My son is 6 months old also. He takes 10mg/3x’s daily. Maybe your son needs a higher dose. Have you visited the MARCI-kids website? They have PPI dosing information that you can print and share with your doctor if you think he/she would be hesitant to increase your son’s dose. My son was on a lower dose for a few weeks, and there was some improvement initially, but then he got worse again. Once we got him on the higher dose he got much better and is doing great now! (it took about a week and a half for the higher dose to kick in.)
I’ve never tried Barley with any of my kids. Check to see if there’s any soy or anthing in it that may be bothering him. I would have never thought of that until I read some mom’s post that Gerber Oatmeal has soy in it and that some babies react to soy.
I’ve always given my kids oatmeal cereal and they all have done great on it. (Gerber has soy, Beechnut does not).
Lots of moms say teething brings an increase in Reflux symptoms in their children. My son doesn’t want to eat much either when he is teething. Just hurts too much I guess.
Hope this helps some. Here’s the link for PPI dosing and other great info on GERD http://www.marci-kids.com/
Good luck and I hope your little one is feeling better very soon.

InactiveCurtis weighs between 17.5-18 pounds.
I guess I didn’t think that he has outgrown his dose because it just seemed to happen so suddenly. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to go higher than 15 mg. I think my ped said 20 mg was the max he would go for his weight.
I really hope it’s just teething and that he’ll get back on track when the tooth pops through, I just hate watching him squirm and struggle and be so uncomfortable.

InactiveMy daughter is 20 lbs and on 30mg, 15mg is way to low. It was like night or day when my daughter would show signs of needing a higher dosage, that is normal. Unfortunately to help with the acid sometimes a higher dosage is the only thing that will help. Believe me, I hate medicating my daughter but now that she is reflux free it was well worth it. Most ped do not prescribe high dosages of PPI’s. I highly recommend a specialist, a ped GI will go higher (well most of them)

InactiveThanks for the info, maybe I will get in to see the ped sooner and get a dose adjustment if things don’t improve in a few days. I actually have an appointment to see a ped GI, unfortunately we can’t get in till June…..a lot of good that is.
Stupid question, I was wondering about growth spurts though, could it just be the way there body is changing so quickly during a growth spurt make reflux worse? He seems really tired today as well, so I’m wondering if that is contributing to things………..

InactiveMy daughter did the same thing at 6 months. She is on 30 mg now, split 10 3x a day. I would go with the 20 mg. and see if it helps. Also, alot of moms put benedryl on the teething areas to block the histines, and make the reflux better.
We had huge success with the barley, but we use beechnut brand because of no soy. You said you don’t know if you have an intolerance issue or not, but at 6months my daughter started reacting to the trace milk proteins in the nutramigen. I know they are in alimentum too. She was vomiting more, had major gas and diarrhea. We had to go to neocate.
Welcome to the site, hope your son feels better once his ppi is higher!

InactiveHi,
We just went through the same thing- my son turned 6 months on Saturday, is teething and we just upped his dose of previcid to 22.5- made all the difference, most ‘teething’ symptoms have actually gone away (meaning they were probably reflux all along)… He also went through a growth spurt for about 2 days earlier this week (was great to see him actually suck on the bottle!).
This is the link to my recent posts for teething and the other one is for previcid dosing with a response from Joel at Marci-kids. https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5001&a mp;PN=1 and https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5032&a mp;PN=1
Hope this helps…

InactiveJulie, how long did it take to see an improvement with the 22.5 mg? I guess I’m hoping things will improve once the tooth breaks through without having to increase the meds, but I have a feeling this will not be the case………

InactiveHi Cindy,
I noticed improvement literally the first day and then we played around with the dosing and time of day. We tried:
First: 15 in the AM, then 7.5 at night
Then: 7.5 AM, 7.5 at 11:00am, 7.5 at night
Settled on: 7.5 AM, 7.5 around 2:30, 7.5 at night- his afternoons were bad so this seems to help, its been a few days now and things seem to have smoothed out.I also should mention that he did have some gassiness and stomach pain with the increase and the moving around too- but only a few days worth and then back to ‘normal’.
Good luck- Julie
