InactiveHi,
We are still giving our 6 months old daughter feeds at night. She only takes about 90-100 ml per feed every 3 hours and we keep the same pattern at night. I heard that this might effect her day feeding pattern as she is starting to refuse some day feeds. Should we minimize the night feeds?
regards,
Tariq

InactiveNight feeding is a tough issue, as all babies are different, and it’s not always easy to tell if she is eating at night because she is really hungry, or if she is eating then simply out of habit. If she is eating the same amount at night as she does during the day, then I would think that she is really hungry. However, if she only eats for a bit and then falls right back to sleep, then she is probably doing it out of habit and using the bottle to help herself get back to sleep. I would think (again, you know your dd best though) that at that age, she should be able to drop at least one feed at night.
It’s hard to do, but you could try seeing what happens if you don’t go in to her right when she fusses at night. When my son started dropping feeds, he would still wake at the same times, but he would only fuss for a few minutes and then go right back to sleep. Now, I’m not suggesting you let her cry for a long time, but maybe just wait a minute or two and see what happens. Maybe she’ll surprise you and go right back to sleep.November 26, 2007 at 7:55 am #45775Anonymous
InactiveI’m assuming your not breastfeeding since you said, “we are giving her feeds”. If you are breastfeeding the night feeding is very normal. I wish I knew about formula, but I have no advice on that one. I would think though if you were having weight gain issues that the night feeding could help with that. I’m not an expert though. Sorry, I may have been of no help at all.

InactiveHI
Ashlynn who is getting ready to turm 6 months on the 3rd also is still waking up for feedings. I know that a couple of times I have let her fuss a little longer and she has fell back to sleep and then there have been a few times you would have thought that she has not ate all day. Ashlynn has only slept through the night maybe three times since she was born.By the way we had awesome weekend this week with Ash. Happy smiling. Yea!!! We practiced on sittign up this weekend. I am thinking her pot belly is making her top heavy. ( she weighs about 20lbs)stcwatt2007-11-26 13:11:21

InactiveIf there are no weight gain issues, you can try to play around with it and see what happens. All babies are different. My first was off night feeds by 4 months- her doing, not mine! My second had feeding problems due to reflux. We couldn’t get her to take in enough at each feeding and had to do night feeds to keep her weight up for 2 years. The feeding specialists we saw did say that when you feed at night, it can reduce daytime hunger, but that’s in a normal child all things being equal. If you want to play around with it, maybe try cutting out a night feed, and see if she eats more during the day. From what I’ve read, it is normal to still be on night feeds even for non-refluxers at 6 months, with most dropping the night feed around 9 months when bottle feeding and later if BF. Good luck.

InactiveThanks for your kind input. Her weight is an issue and that’s why we keep feeding her at night. Hwoever, we started to spread her feeds from 3 hours a part to 4 during the night.
thanks again.
