InactiveHello. I used to post here, but haven’t in quite some time. My two refluxers have been doing really well. However I have a new foster son who I think might have reflux. He’s 6mths and on Isomil Advance and no other baby food. He is just 13lbs 12oz so a tiny guy. He drinks 4-5oz every 2-3 hours. He is pretty happy during the day-at night though it’s a different story! He wakes up coughing and does so until he gags and sometimes spits up. His cough is very wet sounding and this is only at night and for a short time in the morning. I did have him at the peds and his chest is clear-at the time he also had a cold. The nasty nose is gone now so I know it’s not a cold anymore. Last night was awful,he would eat go right to sleep and then start the coughing-he coughs with every breath it seems. It takes him a good 15-20 minutes to stop and then he sleeps fine until he eats again. I have tried having him sleep in a infant seat-he hates it and screams. My others that had reflux it was clear that is what they had-the arching, screaming, not wanting to eat(except my son who was a comfort eater). Any advice is appreciated! Thanks! I just don’t want to jump to comclusions-I have no idea when he was put on Isomil or why-I plan on trying to find that out tomorrow. It is doubtful anyone will know though! Thanks again.

InactiveHow lucky your littte foster son is to have you!! And how brave you are to take on such a responsibility after having two refluxers. You must have the patience of a saint!
I’ve known kids who cough and cough (especially at night) who end up finally being diagnosed with ashtma. I say finally because it’is not an easy diagnosis to make. The symptoms can be different for each child, and they sometimes come and go. Does he wheeze at all?
I’ve had two babies with reflux. My daughter had silent reflux. She never coughed at night. My son has reflux – he coughs from time to time for a few nights in a row and he has a slight wheeze sometimes. There’s asthma in my family and in dh’s family, so I’m not sure if my son’s coughing is from his reflux or if it’s a cold, or if he has early signs of asthma. (It figures, I just had him at the doctor on Friday and he was fine then!).
I remember one time my son choked on his spit up after refluxing and he had a terrible wheeze and cough for a few days. It cleared up on it’s own and he didn’t wheeze or cough again for a long time.
I’m sorry I’m probably not being very helpful. Welcome back to this site. I hope your little foster son doesn’t have reflux and that whatever is making him cough clears up soon.

InactiveThanks for the support! Today we are trying playtex bottles to see if he’s getting too much air from the traditional bottle. My others were all on playtex so time will tell! I did notice he has a new tooth today so the drool factor may very well be causing him the extra grief! My oldest has asthma with the cough at night being her main symptom-his sounds different though. Who knows though! He did come out of a smokey environment and it can take awhile to get that out of their system. It can cause the cough and congestion as I’ve had a couple others that had that problem and it cleared up in a couple of weeks. So for now we are trying different bottles and we will see if that helps. If not I’m going to at least call the ped tomorrow and see what he thinks. Thanks again for responding!

InactiveThe smokey environment he came from could be the culprit. Hopefully the cough will improve in the weeks to come. Maybe a cool mist humidifier would help (if you live in a dry environment.) I use them at night for my babies and they always seem to help. Raising the head of the mattress might help a little, too. (I bet you already thought of these things having babies with reflux already, but I thought I’d mention it just in case).
I use Dr. Brown Bottles and I think they are terrifc. If you don’t have any luck with Playtex, maybe you could try Dr. Brown.
Good luck with your little foster son. He’s so tiny!
