A couple of weeks ago Tess started taking forever to eat. This wasn’t a problem before. She was a comfort eater before we started the reflux meds. Once we got on the meds she’s never refused a bottle and up until recently ate just fine (some arching/squirming but a lot less than before). Then one day all of the sudden she was eating slow. She takes 45 minutes to eat 3oz of formula. She typically starts to fall asleep 2/3 of the way through – so much so that I could take the bottle away and she wouldn’t complain but I know she’d be hungry again an hour later. We have lots of sleep issues and I’m convinced that she’s just not getting enough sleep so maybe she’s just too tired? She eats slowly even when she’s really hungry, though. I don’t know what the deal is and if I should even be concerned. I guess it’s not really a problem – just annoying. If anyone has any input I’d love to hear it. TIA!
Thanks, ladies. My husband suggested that, too, but I thought it was odd that this came on all of the sudden and that she doesn’t complain that the flow is too slow. But I guess we should just try the next size up nipple and see how it goes, huh?
I’d definitely try it. We had a similar situation and found it help
greatly – what bottles/nipples do you currently use? We are on
Alimentum RTF and use Doctor Brown wide-neck bottles with #3 nipples.
But at Tess’ age we had just switched to a #2 nipple.
It may take her a day or two to adjust to the faster flow – as long as
she isn’t dribbling formula all over or choking or complaining, you
might want to stick with it for at least a few bottles.
Thanks everyone. We switched to the Dr. Brown’s bottles (that’s what we used with DD#1 but they were too fast for DD#2) and now she’s back to eating in a reasonable amount of time. I was worried she might get more gassy or have more reflux problems but she’s fine.
