InactiveHi,
My wife and I moved to exlusively bottle feeding three weeks ago (expect for breastfeeding overnight) and started the prevacid solutabs. It has taken time but it seems that my son is not longer in pain when he eats. He takes 4 bottles a day and averages 6 ounces. He will rarely take more – but because he isn’t hungry. He still spits up quite a bit a sometimes 2-3 hours after a feeding (he is eating every four hours). His weight gain continues to be slow but is following the 10-15% curve. What has now developed is that he is constantly rubbing his eyes (looks like very minor alergic shiners), he has one bowel movement a day that is greyish blue in colour (although I hear it is common using Nestle’s Good Start), has a dry cough and frequent night waking. He has no diarreha and is not overly fussy right now. I am wondering if the problem could be a milk allergy or intolerance even though there are not typical signs. Would a formula switch to Nutrigamin help? Soy or Latose?Any thoughts would be helpful.AdamJanuary 9, 2008 at 7:54 pm #47157Anonymous
InactiveDefinitely could be a milk issue. Though, my seasonal allergy symptoms have also started to kick up already due to a very warm winter, so that could be the cause of the cough and night wakings too.
What does the Ped. say? If you think it could be the milk, then a switch to Nutrigamin or Alimentum might help, but remember to give it at least two weeks on a new forumula before you switch, as it can take that long for offending protiens to build up or clear out.January 10, 2008 at 1:46 pm #47188Anonymous
InactivePed doesn’t feel that there is an allergy. What I don’t get is why he doesn’t want to eat more? He is getting the bare minimum which is keeping him between the 10th and 15th percentile but I am worried that he might continue to fall with less and less. For example, yesterday he wouldn’t take his third bottle. He’ll take about 6-7oz at 7:30, 4-5oz at 11:30, 6oz at 3:30 and 5-7oz at 7:30. The problem is that he isn’t taking many solids and the 3:30 bottle is hit and miss. I just feel that I missing something here. If it is reflux, and he doesn’t seem to be in pain eating, why would he not want to eat?

InactiveIf he’s not in pain anymore and maintaining his curve, then maybe that’s just where he’s supposed to be. The other thing is that sometimes kids with reflux know to eat just enough to get by, without eating too much to cause pain. You can ask your doc about adding polycose or duocal to his bottles if he needs the extra calories. You can also see if your doc feels that hypercaloric feeds are necessary. We were told to add an extra scoop of formula to every bottle to increase her caloric intake. Also, if it helps you to feel better, my dd ate around 16 ounces a day, sometimes less, and it was a struggle to get her to take in that much.
The other thing I really wonder is if you’re dealing with MSPI. I’d try alimentum and see if that helps him. I’ve had two babies on goodstart and my niece and several friends had their babes on it too, and none ever reported “grey blue” poops. When they’re only on formula poop is typically dark brown or dark green in colour, as opposed to the seedy mustard colour you often get when breastfeeding. Pale poops can sometimes be a sign of fat malabsorption. I would definitely bring a poopy diaper in to your doc to take a look.

InactiveInteresting. My wife still breastfeeds once over night and not all poops are the blueish grey colour. Some are however which does make me wonder. However, would there not be other signs ie diarrahea?? I am worried to switch formula’s incase it makes the feeding worse. The last thing I want is for him to start eating less due to a change in forumla taste.

InactiveNot to add more confusion, but I THINK I remember someone posting on here about Good Start causing bluish/purple poops, but it wouldn’t hurt to take in a diaper just to be sure.
Also, have you thought about DGE? From what I understand, babies with DGE often don’t eat much because the food stays in their systems longer than normal, so they don’t feel as hungry.January 10, 2008 at 2:58 pm #47200Anonymous
InactiveI have thought of DGE and for a while we tired Domperidone but it did not seem to help. However, that was before we were really on the prevacid. I wonder if it would worthwhile trying again?? I’ve heard of mixed results from this.

InactiveI would show (or take a picture of) the diaper to your ped or GI. He’ll let you know if it’s normal or not.
