I was just reading one of Joel’s posts below about ways to make Prevacid work the best. He mentioned something about delayed gastric emptying those infants with this spitting up purple/brown flecks? Curtis has done this about 3 times (he’s been on Prevacid for about 2 months)………it has always been about 3-4 hours after he’s been given the prevacid. Does this mean that he may have delayed gastric emptying? Has anyone else had this experience with their babies spitting up purple? It’s never been huge amounts, but it has happened. Now I’m worried that there is something more going on than just the stomach valve being immature?

It also mentions that if your baby has delayed gastric emptying that a PPI might not be as effective…….would Zantac be more effective if that were the case? We never really tried Zantac with him we went straight to a PPI.

sylvia once spit her prevacid up 6 hours later—and she did not have DGE.

If he’s only done that thee times, I wouldn’t be too worried. I think my son probably has DGE also, but I didn’t know what it was until reading about it here. He can throw up something he ate 3 hours ago. His Prevacid still works quite well, though.

You can email Joel if you have any questions about PPI’s or other meds for Reflux. He’s very knowledgeable and he may be able to answer your questions. He’s supposed to be back in his office on the 29th. Here’s his email andrewsjj@health.missouri.edu

Some people use both PPI’s and Zantac. The Zantac alone doesn’t seem to be very effective for most babies – at least that’s what I’ve seen in reading these posts. It definitely didn’t help my daughter when she was on it.
