InactiveI have written on here before about my son and his ongoing issues with what we think it acid reflux. My wife breastfed till 5 1/2 months then switched to bottles as my son would scream being at the breast. Bottles has not been a solution. He only every avgs 24oz a day, sometimes 19, sometimes 27. He is in the 10th percentile for weight and gains very very slow. Because of this doctors aren’t taking me seriously. Over the last week, he got a cold and now is down to 8-12oz a day. This has made his bottle aversion worse and every single feed is a struggle to get anything into him (always has been). I don’t want to wait till he is FTT or risking a feeding tube before something happens but fear that is my only option. He is on prevacid 15mg 2x a day which seems to have little effect. He will suck for a bit and then turn his head away. We have moved to Nutramign three days ago but nothing has really changed. He doesn’t want to eat. He doesn’t cry when eating nor does he vomit. He spits up a lot but is otherwise a happy baby and is developing normally. He is just very small in all likelyhood because he doesn’t eat. I tried to get a refferal to a feeding clinic last week but was refused. I am seeing another pedi tomorrow in hopes things will change. What direction should I take? Should I try another PPI? Should we have tests done (swallow, endoscopy, blood?). Does he need feeding threapy and will it help. Am I staring a feeding tube in the face with no chance of avoiding it. I have no idea what is going on with my son other than he doesn’t like the bottle, didn;t like the breast, and is so so on solids. He has been known to take 7-8 ounce bottles and done so for a few days in a row..however since last wednesday, all of that is a thing of the past. Should I switch back to regular forumla fromt the Nutramign or wait it out to see if it helps. He congestions has been really bad of late so it’s hard from him ot breath. I wonder if the congestion is from the milk. I am just so lost and so worried and want to advocate hard but don’t know what to advocate for?
Any advice at all would be really appreciated. Thanks

InactiveI was just where you are when my daughter was at 6 months. No doctor would listen, so I understand the frustration and feeling of helplessness. There is a way to get him help. Here is what I did:
1. Go to http://www.marci-kids.com. Read ALL you can about PPI’s and their affect on children and the proper dose for your son’s weight. Print off the important stuff and bring it with you to the doctor. Their approach is aggressive but it DOES work.2. Find a pediatric GI and go see him/her…bring paperwork with you.3. Find a pedi who will listen and address your conerns. If a doctor blows you off…they are not a good doctor…period.4. Nutramigen may work for your son…if a child is very sensitive to milk though, it will not work. We had to use Neocate.5. Stop ALL solids until you get this figured out. There has to be a reason he isn’t eating…figure it out before going ahead with any solids…even cereals.6. It will take longer than a few days for you to see a real change from a milk based formula to nutramigen…milk proteins can stay in the system for up to 6 weeks…it should NOT take you that long to see a change though but to see total improvement, it may take that long. I would give it at least 2 weeks. Please feel free to message me with any questions that I did not address. And remember, research all you can for your son…you and your wife are his only advocate…it is tough, but the more you know, the better for him. Good luck!February 20, 2008 at 8:23 pm #48430Anonymous
InactiveBig HUGS to both you and your wife and of course your little one. Tracy hit all the high points and she would know as Addy didn’t take solids until gosh I believe it was 16 months or so, correct me if I am wrong. Hopefully you aren’t dealing with that, but if you are there is help here. Cooper was on Nutramigen for a good 2-3 weeks before I saw a good change, but we were also adjusting meds as well. But he started Nutramigen at I believe 8 weeks so I don’t think he has as much to clear out of his system. We just in the last 2-3 wks have gotten him off Nutramigen and onto a milk based formula. You are the best advocate for your child and I would look until you find someone who will listen to you. Go to a different town/state if you have to to find someone who will listen and take what you are saying seriously. I was lucky, but both dh and I work in the medical profession. Best of Luck. Keep us posted.

InactiveYou say that feeding has always been a struggle. Have you checked to make sure he isn’t tongue tied. I know it’s way out there, but certainly is a common problem for many babies and it can really affect their eating habits. Just a thought.
