InactiveMy 5 week old dd has silent reflux. We’ve tried Zantac, Prevacid Compound and Prevacid solutabs and seen no change at all. Is it possible that even though neither of these did anything for her that another type of medicine might? I just don’t know what else to do for her at this point. She’s had an Upper GI so we see the reflux is happening. Her symptoms are arching/showing pain during feeds, slow weight gain, acts like she gets a bad taste in her mouth sometimes…as if something comes up in her throat, poor sleeping, respiratory issues, etc. My son had bad reflux but his was completely different with projectile vomiting and constant spitting up. Hers isn’t like that at all which is why they are calling it the silent reflux. We had him on Prevacid and Reglan and he did great. Anyone have any advice to offer on her medicine situation? Thanks in advance.

InactiveHmm… my first thought would be to check that the dose of Prevacid was appropriate for her age and weight. Was she getting the marci-kids recommended dosage? http://www.marci-kids.com And how were you giving the solutabs? If the compounded Prevacid was made properly, it wouldn’t matter when it is given, but the solutabs will work best on an empty stomach followed up with a feeding 30-60 minutes later. Prevacid will also work best for babies if dosed 2 or 3 times a day.
Now if the dosage and timing was all right and she didn’t benefit from the Prevacid after giving it at least a 2 week trial, then I would think trying a different PPI like Zegerid would be a good idea. Since her testing shows she has reflux, and her symptoms are consistant with silent reflux, she should hopefully find relief with some form of a PPI.Just another thought, do you know if she has milk/soy protein intolerance (MSPI)? This can often be a cause of reflux and removing milk and soy from your diet if you are breastfeeding, or switching to a hypoallergenic formula is she is formula-fed could help as well.March 18, 2008 at 8:32 pm #49131Anonymous
InactiveMy first question is how long has you lo been on meds? It can take up to 2 weeks for the prevacid to kick in and start working and if you lo is only 5 wks maybe you didn’t give it long enough to work? And make sure that you are giving the solutabs on an empty stomach like Sheri said. Best of Luck.

InactiveI’d also double check the dose. The other thing is that the PPI needs to be given on an empty stomach and followed up with a meal 30-45 minutes later for it to be fully effective.
