InactiveI have posted here a few times regarding my son who is 3 months and has GERD He is currenttly taking prevacid reglan and carafate. I was told he also has milk protein allergy. He just started acting really cranky the past few days lots of crying and mucous in stools he shreaks and I know he is in pain. I put a call into the ped last night and let them know what is going on they told me to come today which I did. I brought my sons diapers with me and the Dr told me mucuos means nothing in the stool. But I have heard otherwise. She also told me that breastfeed babies have mucuos in the stools which I find weird because I have breastfeed 4 kids and never seen this. Then she mentioned he has colic and maybe he has colitis. I feel like these doctors just say whatever but never really address the issue. My poor son is in pain and I feel like its never going to end. His crying has gotten so bad my own mother refuses to watch him last time she did she was in tears. Is this normal for reflux babies to go thru this and for us parents to just be told deal with it. I am so confused. Also I asked about Neocate because when I am not breastfeeding he is on nutramigin with little change. And she told me that formula is for premmies. Is that true… Please any advice would be great

InactiveWHAT?? Neocate is definitely not for preemies. She was thinking of Neosure, a formula that is for preemies because it is 22 calories instead of 20. If your ds is MSPI (milk soy protein intolerant) than the Nutramigen will not help. Nutramigen is a hypoallergenic formula, but still contains milk proteins.
IMO, if I was you, I would probably:a. find a new doc. If this one doesn’t know the difference between Neocate and Neosure, that’s a bad sign. Also, the doc not knowing that Nutramigen has milk in it is a bad sign too. Have you been to a ped GI?b. maybe in the meantime, get some Neocate or Elecare for yourself. You can order it off the web, by calling the manufacturers, or some pharmacies have this formula in stock. Also, how was your sons milk intolerance diagnosed? If you brought the ped the diaper with mucous in it, she probably should have tested the stool for blood. It’s like a ten second test.I know that mucous in the stool doesn’t always have something to do with a milk or soy problem. I’m not sure of the other reasons, but hopefully someone else will chime in with the answer.Good luck! **HUGS**March 26, 2008 at 8:05 am #49374Anonymous
InactiveI am so sorry! The previous poster took the words right out of my mouth regarding the Neocate. It is NOT for preemies! Preschoolers+ are on it!!! She had to be thinking of Neosure and neosure is milk basedbtw anyway…scary! I think the saddest thing here is that you went in obviously at wits end with a crying baby, mucousy diapers and are just told to “deal with it”. I’ve def been there, and it’s sooo hard to find someone to help sometimes. I’d call back and ask (no demand) to be referred to a ped gi (and if nothing else, maybe that will perk your ped up and she’ll take you more seriously and give you and Rx for Neocate/Elecare)
Good Luck and HUGS!!!kdub- that new pic of your kids is priceless!!!March 26, 2008 at 8:40 am #49377Anonymous
InactiveI will say that some babies who have mild MSPI can do Nutramigen however some do have to have Neocate. We did okay on Nutramigen but probably could have done better on neocate but I was “happy” with my lo on Nutramigen. Other than that I don’t have much to add.

InactiveMucus in the stool is usually due to food intolerance. Since you are nursing, is your diet completely dairy free? Or are you doing TED or any other form of elimination diet? If you haven’t already, it would be very helpful to remove ALL dairy and soy from your diet since it appears that your son has MSPI. If you have already done this and you still see mucus and discomfort, I think TED would be the next step and using Neocate or Elecare as a supplemental formula when necessary.
As for your doctor’s response about Neocate – WOW! If it is possible to see another doctor, I would strongly recommend it. My daughter is 16 months old and still almost exclusively eating Neocate. It has done wonders for her.March 26, 2008 at 8:38 pm #49417Anonymous
InactiveI was going to ask about your diet too. I know me eating dairy would cause mucus in my son’s diet for sure. Also, he would tend to have mucus with tylenol or any other OTC medications or antibiotics.
I second everyone else’s opinions about finding another doc.. i know that’s usually easier said than done, but I think it would be worth it for you and your son. -
