InactiveCole seems to be improving very slowly, he is on day 12 of Zeg. it is still tough though because he gets up 3 times to eat at night. it is wearing me out esp. on days that i work. i don’t know if i should increase dose or not because he has not really improved that much. i tried to email Dr. Phillips twice to ask about how to increase dose and he has not responded.
any thoughts? should i wait another 2 days? i don’t know how to increase the dose myself, i suppose i could just trial and error??April 8, 2008 at 2:23 pm #50071Anonymous
InactiveWhat does the Marci-kids dosing calculator say for his weight and age as far as how much he should be getting?

InactiveI would check with the marci-kids dosing as Naomi said. Is he eating better?

InactiveSusan, how much does he weigh now? The higher dose might be just what he needs to really turn around.

InactiveWhat is his current dose? I would also check the marci-kids dosing calculator and see how far off you are. Good luck!

InactiveI am dosing him per Marci-Kids at 24mg/day. He was 7.3kg 2 weeks ago (16lbs). We r seeing Doc tomorrow and he will be weighed again.
Cole had a rough day feeding, I know he is teething again as his upper tooth is breaking the surface (this is his 3rd!). I’ve been trying the sippy cup more often, but he tends to spit out what he drinks bc he gets a mouthful. I wish sippies gave smaller amounts of liquid when he sucks. Thanks for being here…April 8, 2008 at 11:49 pm #50117Anonymous
InactiveAddysmom or anyone else: Can u explain to me why a buffer is needed for Zegerid? Seems to me if there is enough buffer for the whole 40mg, why wouldn’t there be enough if a person took half the dose? or a fraction?
Why is the buffer amount ok for a 20mg packet, if taken in smaller doses (as you did, Tracy?)?April 9, 2008 at 8:29 am #50125Anonymous
InactiveI copied and pasted this from the marci-kids website. This explains it better than I could. 🙂An important note about buffer needed to protect the omeprazole in ZegeridAlthough the 20 and 40 mg Zegerid packets contain different amounts of omeprazole, both packets contain the same amount of buffer. Therefore, the 40mg packets of Zegerid have half the buffer per each mg of omeprazole when compared to the 20mg packets.
So, when using the 40mg packet of Zegerid (which we recommend in children under 2 years of age) you have to add some additional buffer to protect the omeprazole from being destroyed by stomach acid. We have found that Mylanta Cherry Supreme works well as the additional buffer in this setting. It accomplishes four goals:- It is the additional buffer
- It improves the taste
- It reduces gas
- It reduces the likelihood of the child spitting up the dose

InactiveOh, I meant to add that teething is terrible for refluxers….just terrible! When Addy was teething, we upped her dose and would drop it back down once the tooth was through. I am not saying that is what you should do, as a doc didn’t direct us to do that. It seemed to really help her so we did it.

InactiveI think waking every three hours can still be normal for some babies at that age. Probably not what you want to hear or what your told by others. I know this is especially true for breastfed babies. Not sure if your breast or formula feeding. I do hope you get some sleep soon though.

InactiveHi Shelby,
that actually would be a good thing to hear except Cole use to sleep 12-14 hours thru the night at 3 months till his reflux got out of control. oh well, tis life for now. -
