InactiveI don’t know what to do.. i have a 3 month old, diagnosed with reflux from 2 weeks on, we have tried zantac syrup, prevacid pills opened in applesauce, prevacid powder mixed with milk, and zegerid… My little boy hates the taste of all of it and i am lucky if i can get a 4th of dose of medicine down him a day. He refluxes and spits up soo much that i have to constantly carry a burp cloth around. Also his cough.. he coughs all the time and it just seems to get worse! I don’t know what else to do or what else to try.. if it isn’t breastmilk he won’t take a bottle and if it tastes bad, he just pushes it out.. he won’t swallow.. just scream and scream until he gets to nurse.. he will take a bottle cause i work 2 nights a week and my husband watches him.. but like i said only with plain breastmilk.. has anyone else had this problem???

Inactiveis compounded prilosec an option? we used it for andy up until he was 14 months old. the pharmacist would add fruit flavor and it helped a lot. we used the syringes to administer every med..and i still do for his allergy meds even at 25 months. what i do is point the syringe towards his cheek and make sure that it shoots towards the back but bounces off of his cheek. that triggers a swallowing motion..not gagging.
also, consider cherry supreme mylanta as something to supplement until your baby gets relief from a PPI.
it is tough. he drinks to soothe his irritated esophagus. keep at with the breastmilk and get the medication issue sorted out. once you have that variable out then you can look towards whether or not your baby has food intolerances.

InactiveI would be cautious of prilosec that is compounded with flavouring. The flavouring will degrade the drug in less than a week. Unflavoured compounds are an option, but they also taste terrible.

InactiveI would also reccomend a compound as this was the only thing that really worked for us too! We get protonix compounded and give it to him in a medicine pacifier. We get a 30 day supply and have never had an issue with the protonix not working and trust me we would know if it wasn’t. He went from eating 7oz of formula and screaming and crying and not sleeping to a very happy baby with almost normal eating habbits. We tried zantac, prevacid powder, and prevacid solutabs before and none helped us either.

I know exactly what you mean. My son HATES every medicine I have ever tried to give him. He gags, spits, chokes, and even has apirated some in attempting to not swallow his medicine. Fortunately, as much as he hates everthing else (tylenol, motrin, benadryl, cough medicine, and Zegerid), he doesn’t mind the Prevacid Solutabs. They are pretty tasty and you only need a tiny bit of water to dissolve them so the amount you administer is tiny (about 2mls.). Can you ask you doctor to let him try the Solutabs? Also, a trick I’ve learned when giving him the stuff he hates is to mix the medicine with a tiny bit of baby cereal to make it thick. It’s harder for them to spit it out when it’s thicker. He’ll sometimes take it from a spoon this way, but if not, I do what Patty M says and shoot it with a syringe towards the inside of the cheek in the back of the mouth. Also, this helps alot, I pull the syringe out only partly because if you leave the syringe in the mouth, it makes it much harder for him to spit anything out. Another trick is to sing, or shake a toy or something to give him a little distraction just as you squirt the medicine in. This helps with my little guy sometimes.
If none of that works, I’d try the solutabs. They’re tasy and easy to administer. I wanted to switch my son to Zegerid because you can give it anytime instead of the 2 hrs. after/30 minutes before rule, but he simply hates it and it’s so much easier to give him something he doesn’t fight.

Inactivein my experience the flavoring did not degrade the compound. it actually was compounded in 30 day batches and i would say that the 3 days before the batch expired i would start to notice some discomfort. other than that my little guy did well at a pretty high dose.
his ped GI actually switched from compounded prevacid to compounded prilosec because of a stability issue. he said he consistently saw less stability with the prevacid versus prilosec in compounded form.
this time around the doc is going with prevacid solutabs because he is older and due to his hiatal hernia, andy needs a high dose again so the ped GI wants to try the solutabs before going back to the capsules or something else

InactiveHow long have you been giving meds via syringe? It took over two weeks for Lucas to get to where he could tolerage meds from a syringe and then everytime we introduced a new med, it was difficult again for a short while (except for with ZEgerid, he was confused about it for about two days, but loved the taste).
I did a lot of singing, propped him up in the bouncey on on pillows, and had to hold his chin and mouth closed and sometimes blow on his nose to get him to swallow. The first nurse who talked to me after a disasterout first dose of zantac waaaaaay back was like, “honey, he’s going to hate it, so you’ve got to hold his little chin and mouth shut after you administer it into the side of his cheek and help to force him to swallow” she was the no-nonsense type, but her advice worked.
It can take a ppi drug fully 14 days to begin working, so if you haven’t had him on that for 14 days, it could be he’s not getting relief yet. Also, the symptoms you describe sound like classic reflux, coughing etc. and until he feels better, he will continue to act that way. Bmilk has natural antacid properties and is easier on their tummies than anything else, not to mention the comfort factor, so that is why he will tolerate the bmilk the best. Keep at it, getting the proper doses of meds into them is VERY important.
compounded prevacid CAN be a problem, but it isn’t a problem for everyone. This is an advantage of using the prevacid solutabs or Zegerid. Both of the mothers above are right, but its good to know that it can be an issue. We had the same problem where the compounded prevacid wasn’t stable and our baby backslid a LOT on the compounded prevacid. You don’t want to be playing guessing games while your baby is miserable. HTH!
