My ds is 12 months old and even though we both love b/f I feel I have to wean because of the possibility of food allergies and he keeps getting thrush. But, how do I wean him when b/f is his main source of comfort? He nurses constantly throughout the night and b/f is the only way he will fall asleep. Plus we co-sleep. We want to do sleep training with him and attempted it once, but I can’t do it when I know he’s in pain from reflux. I wanted to wait till we get what’s ailing him figured out and he’s feeling better, but I don’t know how long that’s going to be. Am I crazy for even thinking of weaning? Any tips or advice on weaning a refluxy baby would be greatly appreciated TIA!
the thrush could be just as much of a source of his discomfort as the reflux itself. if he is still in pain from reflux, then he is not medicated properly.
Christine is right, thrush can be horrible and it can be tough to get rid of. Here is an old post of mine when Landen had thrush. I ended up using these wonderful ladies advice and asked for the oral diflucan for Landen to get rid of it. If you are breastfeeding, you will need something for yourself too.
Good luck, I remember how tough this was. The reflux was 100x worse for Landen when he thrush. I remember it to be one of the worst flare ups he ever had. (you will hear me say that often on this board)
can I ask a stupid question? how do you prevent thrush from occuring? i’ve worried about getting it…sorry if it’s a little off topic.
good luck, beth! i’ve wondered how to wean my ds (eventually). i know that some babies are happy with a boob without milk…just for comfort sucking. but, maybe you want to cut out all sucking?
