InactiveOkay – I’m probably jinxing myself by saying anything, but our baby (only 3 weeks old) has NEVER woken up crying at night… she sleeps really well at night and tends to wake up every 2-3 hours (just babbling) to eat, then right back to sleep – YAY (again, I’m sure I’m jinxing myself). The dr says it’s great and to “never wake a sleeping baby” – which I tend to agree. However, tonight I woke up and realized she hadn’t woken up in 6 hours… I panicked that something was wrong – no, she was just sleeping, but I woke her up 1) to change her and 2) in hopes she’d want to eat – which she did… then back to sleep. My question – should I have just let her sleep? I mean, she’s only 3 weeks old – how long is TOO long to let her sleep straight through? THANKS!

InactiveI think i would have just let her sleep.. she probably wouldnt have slept much longer anyhow. She is getting on a GREAT schedule!! Thats amazing at 3 weeks.. i wouldnt start waking her and messing it up. BUT thats just me.. curious to see what other moms think too. I think if she is gaining weight and eating enough all day.. she might be ok with just eating twice during the night??

InactiveI would agree with Lauren. I never woke Cooper up until recently. And still I only do it when I absolutely have to. My little guy was rare in that he woke to eat in the middle of the night until he was 10 months old. But then I still never woke him. I say let her sleep as long as she wants and she will wake up to eat when she is hungry. sleeping that great at 3 wks is wonderful. I hope it continues.

InactiveMy ped’s rule of thumb is that when db is back up to birth weight (around 2wks old) then you can let him/her sleep as much as you want @ night & don’t wake. My 1st ds was like your dd… doing 6hr stretches very early on & never crying @ night. Not so much w/ Evan-lol. Congrats.

InactiveYeah, I agree…let her sleep. Some babies are born sleepers, and those moms sure are lucky. My firsborn was sleeping 12 hours a night by 8 weeks and probably would have slept longer. I used to put her down at 8pm, and wake her at 8 am. She’d eat and go back to sleep until 10 am!!! She continued to sleep 12 hours a night and take a three hour nap until she started Kindergarten!
My second baby was sleeping 10 hours straight at an astonishingly young age…only 2 or 3 weeks, and she continued to do that until her reflux started at 10 weeks, which of course ruined it for all of us. As soon as she outgrew her reflux though she went back to sleeping like a log again. My theory is that babies who sleep for long stretches at a young age probably have slower metabolism than babies who need to be up eating all night. It’s certainly proven to be true in our house. My girls put on weight very easily. Aslo some babies just need more sleep than others. My firstborn is still the one who needs the most sleep of the three. Also, babies who sleep a lot at night tend to eat more and be up more during the day.Happy sleep filled nights! I hope the trend continues!September 14, 2008 at 9:38 am #56560Anonymous
InactiveUnless your breastfeeding let her sleep. If your breastfeeding however you do need to wake your baby to make sure they are building up your supply.

InactiveI’d let her sleep.
My son has slept 4 hours, up to feed, then another 3-4 hours since he was a week old. If he’d sleep longer, I’d let him, hehe.

InactiveI would let her sleep. Eli slept like for sleeps alot too and as long as his weight is fine I don’t see any reason to wake him. Also if you are breastfeeding you could always pump so you don’t have to wake her up.
