InactiveDue to my ds’s constipation problems I am trying another formula hoping that it will alleviate his constipation ( I am always reading that soy causes constipation ) so he won’t have to be given miralax or karo to stay regular…so I am trying Similac Sensitive RS. It is the one with the rice starch added so it stays down better…and goes down better too I might add. I am adding one tbsp of oatmeal cereal per 5 oz of formula just to thicken it a little more where I was adding 2 tbsp to his bottles of soy formula. My question is will the rice starch in the formula constipate him too? Has anyone else used this formula and had problems with constipation?

InactiveThe rice is often just as bad as the soy. Does he have MSPI? If not, why not try a milk based formula. If he is MSPI, then I’d try alimentum.

InactiveI don’t know if he has MSPI, we just put him on the soy when I stopped breastfeeding because we think he may be lactose intolerant, as I am. My previous ped. which I no longer go to, had me put him on Alimentum for a trial and he did horrible on that. It made him have severe gas and spit up all over the place. So far he is taking the Similac Sensitive RS very well, it is a milk based formula thickened with rice starch, but lactose free. Had I known about this formula then I would have tried it way sooner. My new ped. gave me a sample of it at his 2 month and I just got to try it today. He doesn’t seem to be as gassy, we’ll see if it affects his bm’s any differently. He has only been drinking it since this morning. I was able to totally eliminate thickening with the oatmeal cereal if I use the smallest nipple Avent makes, the slow flow. He can drink it without choking, gagging, etc…I am so excited about that. He hasn’t really spit up all day and has slept like an angel. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this is the solution, we shall see!

InactiveI hope it works for you! Not to be a downer, but there is usually a honeymoon period with each formula change. so, if you start to see things go back downhill, that’s what’s going on.

InactiveOh, how long does the “honeymoon period” typically last? He spit up a TON this morning but it bothered me more than it bothered him. He also woke up at his normal feeding time crying and straining…but after he passed the bm he was still crying and I couldn’t get him to eat at all…and it was not a hard stool either so I can’t figure out why he seemed in such pain. I put him in his swing and he slept a couple of hours longer and when he woke up to eat he was fine? Maybe he had gas or a tummyache…it was strange…he went like 7 hours between feeds and he never does that. After that feeding is when he spit up so much. …
