My daughter has an eczema rash on the back of her leg (behind her knee). She’s had it for over a month. Her doctor keeps recommending vaseline with every diaper change. I have been applying vaseline for 2 weeks with no improvement. I would like to try a hydrocortisone cream (1%) like Cortaid, and from what I’ve read on the internet, this is safe if you only apply it a couple times a day for a few days. However, when I went to apply it, I saw the Cortaid tube says DO NOT USE for children under 2 years old. ??? Have any of you used hydrocortisone cream recommended by your doctor on a baby as young as mine (6 months old – adjusted age)?

I plan to ask the pharmacist today and get his opinion too.

My doctor reccommended CORTAID OINTMENT (not cream) for my kids when they were only a few months old. It worked great for all of them!!

If it is eczema, the cortaid ointment will work wonders. If that doesn’t work it may be a fungal rash. Babies get them in their creases – places that sometimes stay a little wet after a bath. A little monitstat will clear it up if that’s what it is.

My doctor said both products are fine, use a thin layer twice per day. If it gets worse with the cortaid, it’s probably fungal; switch to the monistat, and use the monistat for a few days after it clears up to prevent it from coming back.

I actually have a prescription for cortizone cream 2% that I use on her face 2x a day since she was 3 months old, so the 1% cream should be fine. They just have their disclaimers…. I also like the ointment. Behind the knee is also a typical spot for ezcema. How uncomfortable for little babies!

I don’t have much experience with cortaid, but I use Calendula Cream by California Baby on my son’s serious dry patches and this clears it right up, if you are looking for a more natural product. I actually started using only California Baby products on his skin because they contain no nut oils like a lot of baby products do, and he hasn’t had near the amount of dry skin or cradle cap he did in the beginning.

We have used hydrocortisone since Isaac was around 2 weeks old. I have never had any problem with it at all.

They are using Eucerin (sp?) in the NICU on Carter now. It seems to work really well…….
