InactiveNoah just turned 1 this past weekend and I am still giving him Good Start Soy formula and some breast milk. I havent made the switch to milk because I dont know if his belly could tolerate it. I dont think he has any dairy issues, although I have just recently been giving him yogart and he has developed a few rash like dots around his mouth. He also doesnt eat a very balanced diet. He will eat pureed fruits, but doesnt care for meats or veggies very much. He isnt eating table food either. Do you think its ok to continue with formula? Does it contain the proper nutrients for babies that are over a year? I’m really clueless about this whole issue since my other 2 boys were strictly breast fed for a year and also were great table food eaters.

InactiveAfter I ran out of expressed breast milk I kept both of my girls on formula well past their first birthdays (probably until 15 or 18 months) because I wasn’t sure they were eating enough solids or table foods to meet their nutritional needs. I can’t see how it would hurt to keep them on formula.
After a year I gave my girls some whole milk every day and gradually phased out the formula as they grew older and were eating a wider variety of foods. Since your little guy can’t tolerate milk yet, the formula is probably the best thing for him until he’s eating more foods.
The formula companies make toddler or follow-up formula which I think has the added calcium toddlers need. That’s what I used. They make it in soy also.

InactiveLisa,
Regardless of whether they have reflux or not, my ped likes to keep them on formula until they’re eating a balanced diet or around 15 months or so. I know he had my daughter’s friend, who also had reflux on it until 16 months. I don’t think you have to worry. My older daughter was on formula until well beyond her first birthday- and she ate great (and it wasn’t the follow-up kind either). I would ask your ped about it at his next doctor’s visit.

InactiveSeth is 15 months and still gets Alimentum in the mornings and rice milk throughout the day. His ped. GI said we could go straight to rice milk but I am keeping him on the formula to ensure he gets the protein and fat he needs since he does not do well with dairy. He is getting calcium from the rice milk.
If Noah does tolerate the Good Start formulas maybe you could check out their Good Start 2 product as Christine suggested.
Also, if he is doing well on soy formula, soy milk may be an option too. It has more protein and fat than rice milk and can be a good alternative to whole milk. I would just call your ped. and see what they recommend.

InactiveMy first son Mason wasn’t consistant with his eating (solids or otherwise) until he was nearly 19 months and i kept him on regular formula. I called the Goodstart hotline/helpline and they recommended that he be on regular formula as opposed to the followup formulas as they do have the xtra calcium but lack the same amount of nutrients as the regular formulas . I would just go with your gut.
