InactiveOkay, so our older child has been on Zegerid for three years but i have some questions about my two month old.
1. Marci kids website says to mix the zegerid 40 mg packets with Mylanta since there is less buffer present in teh 40 mg ones. I have never done this with Lucas but tried it for the first time with Norah….anyone got any experience with this?
2. We have just added a third dose in the middle of the day to begin tomorrow. she’s been on zegerid a week on this coming Wednesday….does it take two weeks for zegerid to begin working as well? Things are much better for about two hours after her dose and then she has a lot of breakthrough acid all over again. Should this resolve as we get close to the two week mark, or is this just a low dose issue?
3. Has anyone actually had their young infant on the MARCI- kids recommended dosages….they are so high. But I think Lucas was on their recommended dose but he was around 6-7 months old when we got him onto zegerid. She just seems so little, but I will push for higher dosing as well if that will make a difference.
any stories about your babies’ experiences on zegerid will be helpful! Thanks in advance!

InactiveHi Anne! I am so sorry you are going through this again!!
1. We used the 20mg packets so I never needed to worry about a buffer. Mylanta and Tums both work though as an added buffer.2. We used 3 doses from the beginning. It’s hard to say whether it’s breakthrough or a low dose…what dose is she on? I would try the 3rd dose and see how it goes for a few days. It took us a little longer than two weeks before we saw full results. I remember hitting the magic “14 day mark” and sighing because things still weren’t perfect. However, by day 17 I finally saw dramatic improvements!3. Sarah was on the marci-kids dose! She started the max dose at 4 months old. I would have gladly put her on the max dose sooner if I would have known about marci-kids and PPIs sooner!!I don’t have much time right now but feel free to PM me if you have any more zegerid questions! Good luck!amy00132008-11-18 07:11:54

InactiveHey Anne,
We used the 40 mg. packs of Zegerid for Ben and used both the Mylanta and Tums for buffer. (too much mylanta gave him the runs) He was on the max dose as well, really, really high at one time – I think 48 mgs./day at one point, but that’s what it took for him to be comfortable. We went to three doses as soon as I knew that’s what marci-kids suggested, so I think probably around his 2 month mark or so. I would say that it was probably around day 13 or so for us that I really saw some improvement. Now, he always had bad days here and there, but it wasn’t the scream fest and no eating that it was before the Zegerid. It’s interesting to me that you’ve never used the mylanta for buffer with your son. Have you found that it works better/worse that way? I wonder if you would get better results for Lucas if you added the buffer?November 18, 2008 at 1:51 pm #58804Anonymous
InactiveHi Anne,
1) We use the 40 mg. packets and mix it with Tums. DD didn’t like the taste of cherry mylanta. We mix one packet w/ 20 mL water and dissolve 1 tums and add more water to make a total of 40 mL. She seems to like the taste of the Tums fruit smoothies better.
2) We’re on the max dose for her age at 3 doses/day as well. This is what seems to be keeping her comfortable!
3) I wish we found this site sooner. DD was on the recommended dosage at 4 months and she went way too long w/ the pain. (Tried zantac, and low dosages of prevacid solutabs before finding this forum!) She still has a feeding aversion even though her pain seems to be under control. They might seem to young for the dosages that marci-kids recommends, but if it means it will keep them pain-free, I’d do it. Plus it isn’t possible to overdose.

InactiveWow, thanks so much all three of you for answering so quickly! the ped gi called last night and after I faxed him 18 pages of the MARCI kids info and he’d read it, he said okay to try a third dose– said he’d never done it before but was willing to try– and also said he’d never heard of the Mylanta buffer trick but he was willing to try. I guess I was too scared to ask for a all that AND the monster increase in dosage. He had her on about 10 mg per day split two times, and she’s roughly 5kg. This is way lower than Marci-kids recommended dose for her size, which is closer to 25-30 mg per day. The MARCI kids dose calculator had Norah at 7-9 mg per DOSE three times a day. So, I’m thinking that I’ll give this a few days and then lobby for a higher dose all around. What’s happening is that she’s MUCH happier, able to eat so much better….I am really shocked at how mch more she’s eating already….and she’s able to just “be” and not fuss and scream. But in the mornings and at night, she’ll fall asleep an then 30-45 mins later is waking with acid and bubbles at her mouth and fussing and this continues on and on until she’s exhausted and we crash. you know the story. So, that seems like breakthrough acid and I guess with a higher dose it shouldn’t happen?
I never dealt with feeding aversion with lucas, he could have breastfed 24 hours a day (until he was five I bet!) but with this one I noticed that it seemed that she could eat in small amounts and then be done. It never really occurred to me (even after reading all the info on here about folks with aversions) that this could happen. I also attributed a lot it to overactive letdown, whcih I’ve been having troubles with. Interestingly, it seems that she able to tolerate nursing much better with the zegerid– and the letdown issues must still be there. Maybe they are a much smaller part of the picture than I imagined. The last day or so I notice her eating so much more and much more comfortably during her feedings. Everyone has also commented whenever we go anywhere with her that she’s so small. She was gaining a ounce a day for the most part, but the last three weeks had gained only a pound, so less than an ounce a day. I think after seeing her eat so much better now– that we were possibly headed down that road of aversions as well. yikes.
So, based on what you guys are saying, I’m going on continue to give the mylanta buffer, and add the afternoon dose today (I’m so excited about this) and then ask for higher dosages all around in the next few days if things don’t get better with the breakthrough acid incidents.
Thanks again so much!

InactiveSo today I mixed the zegerid like MARCI kids suggests, the 40 mg packet with only 6.5 mls of water. It’s thick, but she’s been spitting up doses of that and was spitting up the zantac too, so I figure the less going down, the better.
I mixed the mylanta with it in a little thing last night, but today just gave the zegerid and chased it immediately with the mylanta. Is that okay you think? She’s had a great day. It was our first day of the afternoon dose and I think she took a two hour nap. This is what she was doing before the acid started to really get to her.

InactiveHi Anne,
I’m so glad that Norah is doing better! I don’t have any Zegerid experience, but I did want to answer your question #3 from above about having a young infant on such a high PPI dose. With my first son, we really didn’t figure out it was reflux til he had nearly outgrown it, and he was about 9-10 months old when he got on a marci-kids Prevacid dose.So when my second son came along a year and a half ago in terrible reflux pain, we started on Prevacid quickly (less than a month old), but just at a low dose (7.5mg). From there, we went up so slowly (partly bc of a conservative doc who wasn’t on board with marci-kids) — up to 15 mg for two weeks, then up to 22.5 mg for another 2 weeks, and finally up to 30 mg — which is the first time we really saw relief from the pain. I just looked back at the notes I kept from those early days, and I wrote in big letters — “Nathan on 30 mg Prevacid @ 2 1/2 months — REALLY needed it sooner!” It’s just so counterintuitive to look at a tiny 2-month old baby and think, does he/she really need this much medicine?? or am I on the wrong track all together? But we wasted so much time going up on the dose little by little, and if and when we have another refluxer, I’ve got my notes to remind me to go for the higher dose ASAP — you can always try to back off the dose later if you think it’s higher than necessary.Hope this helps. Good luck!! -
