InactiveI had to really push to get him to prescribe the Zegerid. I faxed him all kinds of info from here and Marci-kids, including the suggested dosage for Truman’s weight (per Joel) and the research on how babies metabolize PPIs 3x faster than adults. I very nicely asked him to prescribe 30 mg/ day (10mg x 3) citing Joel and the research. When I went to pick up the Zegerid (after calling no lie 20 drugstores in NYC to find one that stocked the 20mg packets) I saw that he prescribed only 20 mg/ day (10 mg x2). The arrogance!
So what do I do? Follow his instructions and wait for a month to plead my case again? Or follow Joel’s (Dr Phillips’s) dosage. Our insurance doesn’t cover it anyway so I can get a refill whenever I want. Then hopefully with definite improvement after a month have him up the dosage to the 30mg (or find another doctor)?
Thoughts?

InactiveAre you sure the pharmacies are allowed to dispense more than is prescribed by the doctor? I’d be concerned about that.

I think I’d first try calling him and very nicely suggesting he (or his nurse) might have made a mistake; that the research shows my son needs 10mg / 3 x’s per day.
I’d be afraid to give more than is prescribed even knowing that more is needed. These days CPS can get wind of these things and take your kids away from you. I’ve heard of children being removed from their parent’s custody for not following medical advice. That would be my big fear in not following his instructions.
Clearly, he did not prescribe enough, so if you can’t reason with him, you may have to find another doctor, as frustrating as that may be.
I hope it all works out for you soon.

InactiveSame thing happened to us. I guess you could see how he reacts to the zegerid. It took a few days to fully kick in, we used zantac in between spaced apart by 4 hours. I fully understand that its necessary to take things into our own hands at time. I have even done it myself. We are not jumping blindly into upping doses, there is research to back it up and we have spend every day learning about this disease. We are the ones that have to listen to “They’ll grow out of it” and watch them in pain. So if there is something to help the pain and cut the acid, then why not.
By the way, we had repeatedly try to get the zegerid covered by our old insurance company by sending them letters from docs but… we switched companies recently just when i was getting somewhere. So you may want to fight them alittle. We went back to prevacid because of the cost. My ped. is the one that prescribes meds for us, not just the ped gi, maybe you could keep looking for a new doc!

InactiveSaucy,
Until you can get the dose increased, I would mix the 20 mg packets by adding 7 mL (instead of 6.5) of water, then you can divide it into three equal doses of 3.5 mL. But I would push for the increase, as this will help.
