How do you tell between a cold and congestion from reflux? My ds had congestion from reflux and it went away when we upped his meds and switched him to Alimentum. That was about 2-3 weeks ago. This past week (starting Friday) he started getting more congested and sounding hoarse and also not wanting to drink as much. He is sneezing and coughing now and sleeping a lot. His sister has a runny nose and has had one for awhile now. How do I tell between a cold or reflux worsening?

I always wonder about this with my son, too. I never really figure it out and then it just goes away, so most of the time it’s probably a cold. The fact that her sister has a cold is a good clue. The sneezing (classic cold symptom) and sleeping a lot is a good clue, too. If it was reflux he probably would be sleeping less.

If he’s wheezing, I’d call the doctor. Whatever it is, I hope it clears up soon.

Thanks. There is defintiely no wheezing just less bottle eating because of the congestion but solids are still a big hit. His sis has had a runny nose going on 2 weeks now so I was thinking it was the same thing but I never know anymore.

Well the congestion is still here and now we have this barking cough going on. Could his reflux be the problem? Does the reflux cause congestion or is it allergic things?

Maybe Croup?? None of my kids have ever had it, but I’ve heard others describe the cough as sounding like a bark.

I think reflux can cause congestion from the baby aspirating, but I don’t know about the barking cough. I’d call the doctor about that one.

I hope he’s feeling better soon. It’s so scary when your baby is sick and you don’t know what it is.

He doesn’t act sick at all. My daughter had croup and it sounds similar but I don’t think it is that. He was like this before when we went to the gi and then was better and now it is back again. Could he already need a med increase or could he have another allergy issue to the Alimentum?
