Infantreflux.org | Empty stomach?

Waiting for an empty stomach is impossible here. He nurses every hour or 1.5 hours, and takes half an hour to eat. I’ve been trying to wait 30 mins after a meal, then give him the Prilosec, and try to wait another 30 mins but I usually can’t get the full 30.

What should I do?

We seem to have a lot in common! I was just coming on here to write about the exact thing! I’m doing the zantac and prilosec still. Since I can give zantac anytime, I give that first thing when he wakes up because he’s always hungry right away and would hate to force him to wait 30 min. Then I try to do the prilosec 4 hours later. Today it was impossible to wait to feed him after I gave him the prilosec so he pretty much ate right away.

Is it really ineffective then??

With BF babies an empty stomach is about 2 hours after a feed. However, in theory since you’re on a compound you shouldn’t have to wait to medicate. The purpose of compounding meds is so that there isn’t the need for an empty stomach or waiting 30 mins to feed. Although, I have to say my DDs GI DID say that even w/compounds you should still wait 30 min to give the med time to get into their system. I think it depends on the baby and that may also be why parents notice a decrease in effectiveness over time. JMO, give it a try and if things seem worse then you know for your LO they need that time for the med to start working before being fed. Also, you may want to consider switching to something like Zegerid where timing is not necessary. HTH!
