InactiveHi all, I have been off and on here for some time now. My little one is now 13 months old and still having some problems. We all thought he had reflux as a baby – spitting up>30x/day, very colicky (I hate that word), and always congested. I am still breastfeeding him, trying to wean him (he is on whole milk and heavy whipping cream – his GI doctor gave me this concoction).
Well, he saw an allergy/asthma doctor yesterday and tested + for almonds and rice!! I remember trying the total elimination diet, but was not successful in doing it, because he still seemed fussy – could have been the rice maybe?!He also got a RAST blood test done ,and some immune test done too. So, now he is off of his reflux meds, but on to another problem. He barely spits up anymore, but still congested and sick.Anyone else have babies with food allergies – + skin tests? We go back next week.I feel so bad for him, how much of his problems were allergy vs reflux??December 22, 2009 at 2:36 pm #65215Anonymous
InactiveOh I feel for you!
My son has been allergy tested which has come up negative (rast and prick) BUT, they have told me that he IS suffering from severe intolerances, which I already knew. And rice is one of them. Nothing made my son sicker than when I added rice cereal to his bottle at 6 weeks per our pedi to “help with the reflux” OMG!!!
That being said, a lot of your sons horrible reflux symptoms could have been from if/when you gave him rice cereal…absolutely! rice was considered a safe food for babies, but so weird how SO many babies/kids I know now are intolerant to it!Also, keep in mind that just b/c milk didn’t appear as an ALLERGY for your son, does not mean he is not intolerant to it! How are his poops? Are they runny, hard? what color? sorry to ask, but it can be so telling! Is he irritable? Milk and heavy whipping cream would KILL my stomach and I am only mildly lactose intolerant! I would question whether or not it was all that milk (and I can certainly understand if he needs to gain weight) but I’d ask about a special formula with Duocal added for weight gain to rule out an intolerance and switch back if there is no difference.just my opinion! I hope things get better soon!! Hang in there!!jilly782009-12-22 14:36:57

InactiveJill has a great point about his poops. They can tell you so much. My son is allergic to eggs now, but had MSPI when he was really little and I would swear to you that he was intolerant to chicken until he was 18 months old. We did allergy testing when he was 18 months old and the only food that showed positive for us was eggs, we then had RAST done and he is 1/2 to anaphlactic in his reactions. He was sort of retested in October when we got the regular flu shot and he is still highly allergic to eggs. hang in there, it will get better, but I would look into milk alternatives with the duocal like Jill said that might be part of the problem.

InactiveMy son had his adneoids out at about 11 months, while he was under, the GI doctor did a scope and a bunch of biopsies, including lactose intolerance. He was negative on all of them. That being said, he has never had runny poops, but off and on mild constipation, more so lately. I know from my daughters that milk is constipating.
So, with the + almond and rice skin tests that my son had, how conclusive is that? Is he for sure allergic? Waiting for these RAST results over christmas is going to be hard!December 22, 2009 at 7:14 pm #65218Anonymous
Inactivejust wondering.. why heavy cream??? that would make me sick if i drank a lot of it..??

InactiveI guess this is what children’s hospital of wisconsin uses as an aid to help “fatten” these kids up. I trust the GI doc, he is on the feeding team there. He said that people from all over the nation come to the hospital for their feeding clinic. Nice, it is in our backyard. Hopefully my little guy won’t need to go there anymore. He is eating better.
But the recommendation was 1 oz of heavy whipping cream to 7 oz of whole milk. This was after we found out he has no lactose intolerance issues or milk allergies. My little one seems to like it, it makes the milk sweet, which is closer to breast milk. It does help add on the calories!

InactiveIf your son came up postive w/skin prick allergy testing, then he IS allergic to those particular foods. The RAST testing is NOT reliable @ almost any age. The most reliable is Skin Prick/PATCH. I would definately AVOID almonds and rice! Also, like others have mentioned…He may still be INTOLERANT to other foods even though they didn’t come up on the testing. JMO, but I would also take out milk for a good 2 weeks or so and see if you notice any improvements. In the meantime you could supplement w/Hemp milk(by Living Harvest). I suggest Hemp b/c it is high in omega 3 & 6 fatty acids and has the same amount of dietary nutrients that whole milk offers. Plus, you can get several different flavors. My DD drinks the vanilla version and LOVES it!
Also, I’m curious how they ruled out a lactose intolerance…I didn’t think that intolerances could be tested for(even w/biopsies)…That it was a matter of how your body reacted to the particular food that you ingest. So, I’d be leary of that “diagnosis”…
ETA: I’ll post a link to the website. They are many flavors too. Each one lists it’s ingredients and the unsweetened versions don’t contain brown rice syrup(for LOs who can’t tolerate rice).HTH!valentine4mommy2009-12-22 20:49:31
