InactiveThe board here was so helpful in the earlier days of reflux, especially w/ regard to reflux medicines and dosages. The Marci kids site, that I learned about here, was also so helpful. For many months now, we have been treating with Zegerid with no end in site. Our biggest challenges include the following:
- DD2 is still gulping frequently and choking on what appears to be reflux (she has been a silent refluxer from the get go). She also seems to choke more often than normal while simply drinking.
- Her 2 stomach bugs took a full month each to resolve (older kids turned around within a day). There appears to be a lactose sensitivity following any stomach illness. Even with eliminating dairy, she still takes WAY too long to fight a stomach illness. I am afraid to take her to any sort of group child care (church, gym) because I am afraid of a prolonged illness.
- We have had issues with yeast since essentially birth (thrush for me, yeast diaper rashes for DD2; most recent yeast diaper rash was last week so it is an ongoing problem). She gets daily probiotics.
- She often goes on eating “strikes” where she refuses solids. I am not sure if it is related to reflux or when she is backed up (constipated) or both. She definitely prefers drinking to eating.
- We have not yet introduced straight cow’s milk.
- Due to her inconsistency in eating solids, since weaning at 14 months, we have given her Enfagrow forumula to help her get more vitamins. More recently we have been watering down the formula so that she will have a greater appetite for solids.
- When we went to the max dose on Zegerid, she would throw up the medicine notwithstanding buffering w/ Tums Cherry supreme and gas drops. We are relatively close to the max dosage.
- Her weight gain is fine.
We are at a point where we need to reevaluate where we are and where we are going. Our pedi GI has recommended an upper endoscopy and pH probe. I cannot imagine a 19 month old tolerating the probe. I would also be challenged with journaling her symptoms considering we are frequently on the run with the 2 older siblings (at ages 10 and 8 they have school and frequent activities). If you are still with me THANKS!!!! Any advice in general? Advice re. endoscopy and/or pH probe?January 31, 2010 at 4:35 pm #65704Anonymous
InactiveIs Enfagrow milk based formula? Sorry, I have hardly any knowledge of some of the newer formulas. LOL. My babies are 5 and nearly 3. LOL
If it is milk based, you might try something hypo-allergenic…or since your child is 19 months old, even trying Hemp milk, Rice milk or Potato based milk. There are lots of alternatives out there. I say this b/c I have to wonder if there is a root cause to the continuation of reflux after so long on zegerid…plus, the yeasty diapers, even while on probiotics! makes me wonder if its milk intolerance.I guess that would be where I would start…that is if you haven’t already tried that. For the yeast problems, have you tried S. boulardii? I *think* that is a probiotic that targets yeast. Gosh, I was JUSt telling someone else on another site about this. We need Sheri…our probiotic queen to chime in on this one!! LOLHope this helps…and you find something that works soon! I can understand the prolonged illness. My DS2 is really sick right now. It was a Simple cold for my older son, but horrbile bronchiliotis for him. I am not 100% sure he didn’t aspirate into his lungs. It caused a nasty ear infection from refluxing so much, and he also has a GI bug. It’s been over a week for him now and he’s still a walking, talking MESS. InactiveThank you for the reply.
Enfagrow is actually cow milk based. It is a forumula for children ages 12-24 months. I figured it would be an easier transition from BM to cow’s milk and that she would benefit from the added nutrients considering that her solids diet is still sporadic. While BF, I did a strict elimination diet for dairy and did not notice a difference in symptoms. We initially tried a dairy free formula but she completely rejected it.I guess it would not hurt to try some of the cow milk alternatives that you suggested. Thanks for the ideas!Warmly,Melissa -
